The problem is...

I like the idea of a more ordinary companion too, but the thing that bothers me about Clara is that she seems very girl-next-door in a male fantasy way. She's beautiful (I don't know how you define "strikingly beautiful" but Jenna Coleman is very much above average in the looks department), smart in a non threatening way, and created specifically to be all things to the Doctor. Your secret even said it: "just for him". That feels a little icky to me, like someone's fantasy about how they want their future girlfriend to be and not much thought given to how it's only fantasy and not a real person with their own thoughts, feelings and needs.

It's amazing to me that you're going to call a character a "girl-next-door in a male fantasy way" and you're going to do it to the companion AFTER Amy.

I mean, don't get me wrong here, I like both Clara and Amy, it's not a competition. But IMO Amy fits that description a lot more than Clara. I mean, sure, you could argue that it's different because she's not into the Doctor, but given that she's into the average doofy everyman character instead, it's not much of a difference.

The secret was about Clara, so my comment was about Clara. I wouldn't disagree that the girl-next-door fantasy could arguably describe Amy as well, but she didn't have quite the same air of "here I am, manufactured just to suit the needs of the Doctor in every way" feel.

I think the fact that AYRT described Clara that way, and you interpreted as it describing Amy is actually part of the problem.

Ha!

True. I guess I would say that, by comparison, Clara isn't much of a girl-next-door fantasy. But it's a bit, you know, variations on a theme, when you get down to it.

Yes, given that Clara has been super-hacker, chef, resistant to Dalek brainwashing, and Mary Fucking Poppins in her run.

I'm honestly not sure whether you're agreeing with me or pouring scorn on me

However, I will say in case you're pouring scorn on me that none of that is very "girl next door" (except the chef part I guess)
