No, sorry. Dressing up as a Nazi is different than dressing up as a redcoat or an American cavalryman or what have you. That's real dumb.

How so? Both the SS and US Cavalry invaded, raped, plundered, and committed genocide. Matter of historical fact.

First, because of the political associations of the uniform. The SS existed for a short time, solely as a paramilitary organization under Nazi rule committing atrocities and entrenching an evil ideological system. They had no other purpose or existence, and so there's no possible reason to wear that uniform except to evoke that specific history. Because that's all the history there is. In contrast, the US armed forces have existed for several centuries, and done a lot of things, including things that fall under the category of genocide. It's possible that someone is wearing the uniform of a US cavalry officer while intending to evoke some other image of the cavalry; in contrast, again, the only possible political reading of an SS uniform is The Fuckin' Nazis.

I'd also argue that there's a line between the (evil and heinous) things that the United States did in regards to the Indian Wars, and the evil of the Holocaust, in terms of the intentionality, organization, centrality to the purposes of the state, scale, mechanization, and execution - the Holocaust was a planned and well-directed system, rather than a relatively diffuse combination of policies, government and non-government actions, wars, etc. But I understand if you'd prefer not to sign onto that argument, that's a moral distinction that I can understand reasonable people can disagree about.

I'd also appreciate it if you'd acknowledge that Western countries besides the United States have engaged in genocidal acts but I understand if that doesn't fit into your agenda of trolling Americans.

Out of curiosity, what's your stance on Confederate uniforms? Existed for a short period of time, supporting a country established to preserve slavery...

Somewhere in between, I suppose. I don't think they're as bad as Nazi uniforms but I think they're worse than US cavalry uniforms, and they definitely bother me a lot more on an emotional level.

I think maybe one of the things to keep in mind with the Confederacy is that it's still a live issue in many places in the US. There are still a lot of people who are very willing to defend the legacy of the CSA, and many strains of thinking in American politics come out of Confederate apologism, and rehabilitating the CSA uniform and flag is closely connected to that. So there's that to keep in mind.

NAYRT, but they make me uncomfortable. I don't really mind them in a reenactment scenario (well, not entirely true; there are some reenactors that pull a 'heroic confederate' stance), but otherwise nope.

Some, but it's not uncommon for troops representing a state [and this is something I've particularly noticed with troops portraying the confederacy] to be from outside the South*, or for a unit to be able to fill in for whatever side needs more troops for that particular reenactment.

So that attitude isn't as common as a lot of people think. But maybe I've just been lucky.

Depends. One of the things with confederate uniforms [or hell, talking about the Civil War in general] is that no matter what you say someone is going to take it the wrong way and throw a massive fit over it.

Ex. The people who are southern apologists will throw a massive fit if you imply the antebellum south wasn't a wonderful awesome place. At the same time, pointing out that the Union army wasn't exactly knights in shining armor/there were people in the south who weren't all about the slavery you get called a southern apologist.

So...outside of a reenactment setting, something that's touchy and probably best avoided.

tl;dr: A very touchy subject that's best avoided for the most part.

100% okay with Confederate uniforms in a re-enactment aspect, but think they're a little silly to wear to a con. I legit can't think of a scifi or anime reason to wear one in the first place.

This. Plus it's possible to support somethings and not others.

EX. I support them *not* being used for testing drugs w/o their consent [which the US government has been known to do more than once] - but not raping, pillaging, etc.

Also, not to be too blunt but...The US Calvary [or US forces in general] is hardly the only other group that's done that. Just, like most of the other groups involved, political associations aren't quite as strong as they are with Nazis.

I'm... not sure what you're saying? I don't mean to say that all Americans support the armed forces. But when you have a poster who goes out of their way multiple times to specifically call out American armed forces for atrocities they've committed, in a secret that has nothing at all to do with the American military, I think it's reasonable to suspect they might have an interest in pissing some Americans off. And even if it's not reasonable, saying that someone is trolling Americans doesn't imply that all Americans are going to be trolled by that thing, only that some of them could be.

I'm sorry for any misunderstanding, though.

Cultural context. The Nazis are used to this day as representatives of pure evil, which cannot really be said for the US Cavalry. By wearing the uniform, you're associating yourself with the group.
