On the one hand, it is kind of... nervy... to go out in public like that.

On the other hand... it's just clothes. For all the millions of things wrong with Nazi Germany, their sexy evil uniforms and abstract iconography aren't very important. I could be wrong, but my understanding is that in the English-speaking world, Nazi uniforms are more commonly associated with fetish clubs than active hate groups. The active hate groups have their own iconography. I don't think the world is in imminent danger of forgetting Nazis were evil. As long as the costume-wearer doesn't go wandering off to traumatize survivors, I don't think it's actually going to do any harm.

OP

I grew up reading tons of books about what people in the Third Reich did and said, and it all left a very vivid impression on me.

So it'll never be "just clothes" considering the creepiness factor.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-18 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
...no. Their sexy evil uniforms and iconography were very powerful tools of propaganda that still serve their purpose today. As for the English-speaking world, I can't speak for all of it. As an American Jew, I'll tell you right now that my response to a Nazi uniform would not necessarily be outrage and disgust at someone's lack of taste, it would be cold hard terror.

For serious, come at me in a Nazi uniform even if we're at a Halloween Costume party and if I don't know you, you're probably gonna get a heavy object to the head. I don't think I'll even stop to think about it.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-18 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
As a US Jew you are appropriating a reaction from very different group from you. Now if you were an elderly European Jew, you might have a point.

You need to rethink your hysteria and check your privilege.

ayrt

Really? Huh. I had no idea they still had such a modern-day impact. If the uniform is likely to seriously distress passersby, I retract the "just clothes" statement, and they shouldn't wear that. You have changed my mind.

I'm not sure I can agree with "sexy evil uniforms and iconography were very powerful tools of propaganda that still serve their purpose today". Are people seriously being swayed to Nazi views by Nazi costumes?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-18 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Its not liable to really, not outside Germany itself. Some people would just throw hysterics if they saw someone dressed as a Roman legionary. Some people just wander around looking for a reason to get upset.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-19 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Not necessarily swayed, but there are contemporary neo-nazis in America and Europe who still use the iconography.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-19 05:25 am (UTC)(link)
Halo effect--we like people that look sharp. Those people look sharp. They can't be all bad. Maybe they're onto something. I bet wearing that outfit makes them feel powerful. I'd kinda like to feel powerful.

It's not really that obvious of a brain-thing, usually very subconscious, but that's more or less the line the sub-thought goes down.

But yeah, also worth remembering that neo-Nazis are definitely and unfortunately still a thing, and that they tend to like the uniforms as well.

yeah, that they branded themselves that successfully that way is very distinct

(Anonymous) 2014-07-18 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Ever heard of neo-Nazis? They're a thing, in the English-speaking world. And they do, indeed, use the iconography of the Nazis.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-18 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I know they use the symbols, but do they dress up in the full fancy uniform? My mental image gravitates towards either skinheads or people who dress just like everyone else, but this isn't my field so I could easily be wrong.

If they do dress up in the full fancy uniform -- and even if they don't -- what's their opinion of anime cosplayers? Because if they dress up in the uniform and are horrified by anime cosplayers appropriating it, I may have to re-revise my stance and call for the cosplaying purely to horrify them.

Here's a picture of neo-Nazi and former Republican candidate David Duke, wearing a Nazi uniform when he was younger: http://extremepolitics.blogspot.com/2008/03/in-shocking-announcement-david-duke.html

Not really.

They borrow a small number of elements but the reality is in full get up they're more likely to be a gay brit or culturally insensitive japanese guy than they are a neo-nazi, and by orders of magnitude.

they may be just clothes, but i've heard of some cosplayers going one step further and doing the freaking salute while wearing them, and if you don't think there's something really messed up with that, then idk what to tell you.

i may sound sensitive to people from other countries, but hear me out and put yourself in my shoes. i'm french. three out of four of my great-grandparents were deported, starved and killed by the nazis. there are ruins next to my home village, ruins of a village just like mine that was destroyed by the nazis. we even lived close to an abandoned nazi bunker (one of those fuckers), a constant reminder of that the nazis had been here.

so if i saw an ignorant dumbass parading around in a freaking ss uniform, i would a) puke, and b) punch them in their smug little face.

eta: just realized how ranty this sounds. sorry about that. it's not directed at you, anon!

nah, you ain't sensitive, these other people are insensitive

tbh my reaction would be similar to yours. pure rage.

This is NOT a polite question.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-19 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
If the uniform the person was wearing was: ill-fitting, badly patched, and incomplete/mixed with other garments, will you sill be violent?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-19 06:09 am (UTC)(link)
I don't have any Jewish relatives (that I know of), but I'd goddammed help you punch that fucker in the face.

Sadly, David Duke is from my home state, and there are still some KKK groups there too (of course they still hate Jews, among other "imperfect" types).

(Anonymous) 2014-07-19 09:04 am (UTC)(link)
I also have a grandparent that was killed by the Nazis. I'm surprised that we seem to be the only ones here.

When I see someone do that Nazi salute, even mockingly, I'm disgusted and enraged. Words cannot express how much that person is lowered in my estimation. They really aren't thinking about the people whose close family was killed in that conflict.

I'm less annoyed by cosplay for some reason. Perhaps because it just strikes me as irredeemably dim-witted? Prince Harry being a prime case in point. That boy sure is dim.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-19 05:23 am (UTC)(link)
This. At this point, it's like the uniforms have become effectively divorced from the nazis themselves. You see them in situations that have nothing to do with nazi politics or policies because a lot of people find them sexy. If they were dorky, all the Hetalia fans would show up dressed as China or Italy or whoever's uniform was next sexiest.

Well... no. They don't seem to be there yet. But I think they will eventually, in a few more decades or a century or so, and I don't think that's a bad thing. Uniforms are window dressing which distract from the real issues.
