I wasn't aware Hetalia was still a thing. I also didn't think Hetalia cosplayers still did this weird stuff.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-18 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm getting flashbacks to this very community...what year was it again, 2010, I think?

It's... still one of the biggest anime fandoms out there? It's got nothing on something like SNK now, but it's still quite massive.

This is the first I've heard in a long time of a wtf cosplay situation though.

They probably think they are attending a convention in Los Angeles dressed as a character from an anime. It isn't like they are actually professing to be a member of the SS (and since it is in America, that would still be lawful) or doing it in Israel or Germany. People dress up in costumes that have distasteful roots all the time. It is really no different from seeing someone dressed up as a US Cavalryman, and there are enough of those around.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-18 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
No, sorry. Dressing up as a Nazi is different than dressing up as a redcoat or an American cavalryman or what have you. That's real dumb.

From a member of the Hetalia fandom: because they don't get that not everyone understands what they're doing and thinks it's harmless fun. A lot of people don't watch the show and just see people playing around in Nazi uniforms; a lot of people do watch the show and think it's horrifyingly distasteful.

I personally am of the view that it's very much a know-your-audience thing, and any group where you are not sure that every member of it is okay with it (i.e. any group including strangers) is not one to wear that particular cosplay in front of.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-18 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
WW2 is close to 70 years gone now. Chances are that a lot of kids these days didn't even have a grandparent who fought in it. To them it isn't anything more than a setting for old John Wayne movies. To be honest they probably don't even watch John Wayne movies, it is just a boring thing that happens in a history class. It may not even have happened within living memory of a family member. They don't have that emotional, visceral, reaction to it that a lot of us have.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-18 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)

On the one hand, it is kind of... nervy... to go out in public like that.

On the other hand... it's just clothes. For all the millions of things wrong with Nazi Germany, their sexy evil uniforms and abstract iconography aren't very important. I could be wrong, but my understanding is that in the English-speaking world, Nazi uniforms are more commonly associated with fetish clubs than active hate groups. The active hate groups have their own iconography. I don't think the world is in imminent danger of forgetting Nazis were evil. As long as the costume-wearer doesn't go wandering off to traumatize survivors, I don't think it's actually going to do any harm.

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-07-18 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I grew up reading tons of books about what people in the Third Reich did and said, and it all left a very vivid impression on me.

So it'll never be "just clothes" considering the creepiness factor.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-18 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
...no. Their sexy evil uniforms and iconography were very powerful tools of propaganda that still serve their purpose today. As for the English-speaking world, I can't speak for all of it. As an American Jew, I'll tell you right now that my response to a Nazi uniform would not necessarily be outrage and disgust at someone's lack of taste, it would be cold hard terror.

For serious, come at me in a Nazi uniform even if we're at a Halloween Costume party and if I don't know you, you're probably gonna get a heavy object to the head. I don't think I'll even stop to think about it.

Ever heard of neo-Nazis? They're a thing, in the English-speaking world. And they do, indeed, use the iconography of the Nazis.

they may be just clothes, but i've heard of some cosplayers going one step further and doing the freaking salute while wearing them, and if you don't think there's something really messed up with that, then idk what to tell you.

i may sound sensitive to people from other countries, but hear me out and put yourself in my shoes. i'm french. three out of four of my great-grandparents were deported, starved and killed by the nazis. there are ruins next to my home village, ruins of a village just like mine that was destroyed by the nazis. we even lived close to an abandoned nazi bunker (one of those fuckers), a constant reminder of that the nazis had been here.

so if i saw an ignorant dumbass parading around in a freaking ss uniform, i would a) puke, and b) punch them in their smug little face.

eta: just realized how ranty this sounds. sorry about that. it's not directed at you, anon!

This. At this point, it's like the uniforms have become effectively divorced from the nazis themselves. You see them in situations that have nothing to do with nazi politics or policies because a lot of people find them sexy. If they were dorky, all the Hetalia fans would show up dressed as China or Italy or whoever's uniform was next sexiest.

Like no Hetalia fans think wearing an SS armband is 'cool'. If this got posted on the Hetalia community or the Hetalia tag on tumblr, it would get ripped to shreds.

I've also seen "romantic" pictures of Nazi Germany and Prussia in Hetalia cosplay on dA. It's ... mmmm, disquieting.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-18 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
This reminds me, weirdly, of a story my Mom once told me. She was a Jewish girl born in Russia after the war. When she came to the US, she taught ESL, at first to Russian-speakers and then to Spanish-speakers after Amnesty was declared. She had this one student, a young man who was very sweet. She sat with him for some of the lessons, and he finally went and asked another student why my mother recoiled whenever she saw his arm. The guy had a swastika tattooed on him. He came to my Mom apologizing heartily and telling her that it was just the fashion where he came from, that all the gang boys had them back home, and that they learned them from graffiti. He had no idea what it meant. After that he wore long sleeves to my mother's classes.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-18 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah~, that just made me remember the wank when that group of Germany/Prussia/Austria cosplayers went to a Holocaust memorial during a con meetup and took group pictures while doing the salute.

But... yeah, SS/Nazi uniforms aren't something that appeared with Hetalia cosplays. There already were plenty series with Nazis and faux-Nazis before that and they spawned Nazi cosplays. But true, with Hetalia, the numbers went UP. I'm still waiting for the day some idiot cosplayer gets themselves arrested at a con in Germany because they took the detailing a little too far...

(Anonymous) 2014-07-18 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
What gets me is that Himaruya intentionally makes the standard uniforms he gives those characters not very accurate. And he never uses any Nazi iconography outside the iron cross, which was standard long before WWII.

So wearing an accurate uniform doesn't even match the character.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-19 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
/coughs

Not a cosplayer, nor do I attend cons but...last I checked, the majority of the fandom [at least the sane part seeing as I nopped the hell away from the non-sane part] isn't cool with that stuff.

Like, really really not cool with it.

Unfortunately, a lot of cosplayers* seem to go for "authenticity" and...well. There are lots of times when that's good. But times like that? Not so much.

*That I've know, which isn't all that many.
