Ah~, that just made me remember the wank when that group of Germany/Prussia/Austria cosplayers went to a Holocaust memorial during a con meetup and took group pictures while doing the salute.

But... yeah, SS/Nazi uniforms aren't something that appeared with Hetalia cosplays. There already were plenty series with Nazis and faux-Nazis before that and they spawned Nazi cosplays. But true, with Hetalia, the numbers went UP. I'm still waiting for the day some idiot cosplayer gets themselves arrested at a con in Germany because they took the detailing a little too far...

What gets me is that Himaruya intentionally makes the standard uniforms he gives those characters not very accurate. And he never uses any Nazi iconography outside the iron cross, which was standard long before WWII.

So wearing an accurate uniform doesn't even match the character.

Yeah, I know. Some people are... strange when it comes to cosplay - it's either "but it has to be accurate" - but then they sometimes go"But the original does not have enough DETAILS I must add some, otherwise it won't look good!" - which, sure, whatever, can look nice. But not in this case...

Not defending their actions, because it was terrible, but just to clear something up they weren't at a Holocaust memorial. There was one close by. They're at the Prudential Center in Boston (where the con was held).

I think they were for the most part, all teenagers, so they probably weren't super strong in their political leanings.

I looked that up. Wasn't it happenstance about the proximity at Anime Boston? I do know about the epic faildom of people doing the actual goddamn Nazi salute (with half the group facepalming as soon as they realized what the others were doing) though. You can still find the picture but their faces are whited out now.

And yeah, I can't imagine the shitstorm that would go down if someone tried on a full-out with-swastikas cosplay in Germany. They've spent almost 70 years making damn sure nobody starts that shit again and a cosplayer is not about to win out against the Basic Law.

Yes, true, I didn't remember that quite clearly. Doesn't take away from the sheer stupidity, though.

If someone tried that in Germany there would be several phone calls by other con goers and at least a provisional arrest for the idiot who tried it.
