Adult diagnosis of learning disability?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-19 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
hi F!S

i was wondering... how would one go about getting a diagnosis for a learning disability as an adult? so much of the information out there is focused primarily on children, parents and teachers.

i only ask because i've suspected for a long time that i probably have some kind of math-related learning disability like dyscalculia. my mother has also wondered this although she never got me diagnosed because there just wasn't ever any resources in schools for maths-related disorders.

then the other day i read about something called Nonverbal Learning Disability and... well, it's me. the physical clumsiness, the terrible maths ability, poor spatial orientation and sense of time, social awkwardness, shitty handwriting... and the verbal ability and early reading age to compensate for it.

i'm not really sure what to do about this. i feel kind of upset about it, tbh. and i keep reading all these stories of people who have this who are unemployed and have depression and anxiety.

should i get a diagnosis? would it be helpful, or allow me to improve my maths ability, so i know how to do finances and budgeting? do they even have tests for adults?

help?

If you're in college, ask at the disability services office. If not -- bring it up with your primary care provider? They might know where to look next.

*Hugs*

All I have to say is, don't let the worst stories get to you. Websites and YouTube videos and talk shows love to make them out like they're the only ones, and that's... not always true. Also, don't base things on the internet - talk to your doctor or some sort of professional, anyway.

oh, of course! i'm generally pretty wary of anything i hear on the internet, and i intend to speak to a counsellor or someone if i can. i was just wondering /who/ to speak to.

but yeah, anecdotes of people whose lives suck have kinda been getting to me. :(

I was diagnosed with this around age 12-14, but never got any further help... hope your experience is better if you somehow get a diagnosis.

I was diagnosed with severe ADD at the age of 24. It helped, both in terms of getting specific, targeted help, and just having a name for what was wrong with me.
