Sounds good in thoery, but in real life?
(Anonymous) 2014-07-23 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)Don't get me wrong: I am not saying you need to be part of a discriminated minority to understand the struggles and difficulties of THAT specific minority, but that if you have NEVER been discriminated or ostracized against for any reason, justified or not, it is that much harder not to end up being an oblivious douche.
BTW, I think that is why more men are oblivious to discrimination than women: women are not intrinsically more open-minded, it's just that most do experience discrimination in a patriarchal society even in the 21st century and therefore are more likely to be capable of empathy with people being discriminated against, than most men who may be discriminated against for other reasons, but at least avoid the hurdle of being discriminated against for their gender.
PS: 'I Was a Male War Bride' with Cary Grant is totally relevant to this topic!
