But the point is that you should not have to. Mutants should not and women should not. Minorities should not. Non - heterosexual should not. No one should.

Sounds good in thoery, but in real life?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-23 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry but I completely disagree with you: it is an integral part of the human experience and of growing up as a balanced individual, IMO. I am not saying it is fun or that it is a facet of society we should applaud or not try to combat, but anyone who doesn't go through it usually ends up being an entitled a*hole and lacking in compassion.

Don't get me wrong: I am not saying you need to be part of a discriminated minority to understand the struggles and difficulties of THAT specific minority, but that if you have NEVER been discriminated or ostracized against for any reason, justified or not, it is that much harder not to end up being an oblivious douche.

BTW, I think that is why more men are oblivious to discrimination than women: women are not intrinsically more open-minded, it's just that most do experience discrimination in a patriarchal society even in the 21st century and therefore are more likely to be capable of empathy with people being discriminated against, than most men who may be discriminated against for other reasons, but at least avoid the hurdle of being discriminated against for their gender.

PS: 'I Was a Male War Bride' with Cary Grant is totally relevant to this topic!

(Anonymous) 2014-07-19 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
That women feel that intense and totally fucked-up pressure when they shouldn't have to is the whole point.

Given how frequently mutants have been used to stand in for oppressed or stigmatized or minority groups, would you feel comfortable thinking of her dilemma as a stand-in for the actual problems of women?

How is it offensive, in the sense that you mean, that yet another woman has to change her appearance extensively to fit society's demands of what women "should" look like? Just because it's easier for her than it is for most other women doesn't in any way change the fact that SHE HAS TO ENTIRELY CHANGE HER APPEARANCE TO BE DEEMED ACCEPTABLE.

So you're basically saying that because it doesn't take much effort for her to look exceedingly acceptable, she shouldn't care that she has to make that effort.

For me, absolutely nothing will ever beat the wtf-ness of Mystique referring to "Raven Darkholme" as her slave name The Last Stand. Like, I get that the whole mutant thing has long been a metaphor for the Civil Rights movement, but that doesn't even make sense.

gee gay people can fit in with just a little mental effort by pretending to be straight. Trans people can use a little mental effort, and not transition. Non Christians can use a little mental effort and pretend to be Christian in public.

Mutants are a metaphor for oppression of all stripes, and hey women shouldn't be pressured to change their looks in ways they don't want to.

of what general society deems "acceptable."

I'm fat, I can count the number of times I've attempted to wear heels in public on one hand, and I don't exactly spend a lot of time shaping my eyebrows, and I'm pretty damn sure most of society deems me "acceptable." I may not be the ideal, but I'm not exactly being treated weird.

Please stop hyperventilating over what some kid on the internet thinks the other teenagers are saying about her.

This reminds me so much of that one time I watched the Hairspray movie wth a friend and her younger sister. And ater the movie, the sister's first comment was "but eeeewww she's so fat, that's disgusting, fat people shouldn't wear short skirts and dance like that".

Consider the point missed.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-19 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
...you are totally right. Whoa. No matter what amount of effort I put in, I can't look one-tenth as gorgeous as Jennifer Lawrence. Mystique needs to chill.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-19 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Uuuhhh did you EVEN watch the movie?
She doesn't WANT to look like Jennifer Lawernce. She wants to look like HERSELF, her actual blue scaley self, but can't.
Hank even calls her pretty and she responds back with, "you might as well be complimenting my shoes."
The whole xmen thing is pretty obviously a metaphor for the oppression against the LGBT.
Sure a gay person could pass for straight, but that's not who they really are, therefore some dont feel comfortable about themselves or their identitys, just like Mystique.

And I find it pretty funny how you go on and on about how hard women have it and are always pressured to look pretty and nothing else, yet you completely discard her problems because she's conventually attractive. Your hypocrisy is showing buddy.

I don't really agree with you, but I did find it rather annoying that the focus in XMFC was so much on her when it came to "mutants who look different". Because sure, she shouldn't HAVE to change her looks, but she can. The large majority of mutants who don't look 'normal' can't just go and change their looks with barely any effort and fit in perfectly. I wish they had focused more on someone who CAN'T escape that.
nyxelestia: Rose Icon (Default)

...but wasn't that the point? She's a metaphor.

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2014-07-20 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Mutants are regularly used as stand-ins for oppressed or discriminated groups in general. In the comics, this leans towards a lot of parallels with the black civil rights and gay rights movement, but here it looks like she is being used as a metaphor for women (though possibly unintentionally).

The dilemma was never that she had to put so much effort into looking acceptable to society, it was that she had to at all. Women shouldn't have to strive to look acceptable to society, and neither should she. The amount of effort it takes to do so was never part of the problem.

What kind of abusive upbringing did you have?

There is nothing unacceptable about going makeup-free, or wearing flats, or having natural brows, or being a healthy weight. And I'm sorry if you've gotten that impression, because that is wrong and it is madness.

So do you think woman should have to change to be found acceptable by society or not?

And if they shouldn't, why should she?

If they should, then even if she weren't a mutant she wouldn't be acceptable unless she starved, plucked, went under the knife ... so it doesn't really matter. You're essentially saying that you can't empathize with the blue girl because we are essentially all blue girls.
