So much in agreement. There are mutants out there that could wipe out whole cities and people are not supposed to be afraid of them? Why? What proof has been shown that mutants are passive? None. They are always blowing up stuff and feuding with everyone be it regular people or mutants.

That's why try as I might and I keep on trying back into the comics every other year or so, I can't get into X-Men. I keep on thinking that the premise is ridiculous. Mutants fighting for mutant kind and getting ticked at humanity for not excepting them while another mutant is going on a killing spree with their mind and no one can stop them. Ugh. No.

mutants are no more dangerous than the regular superhumans like the ff and the avengers, and they arent feared and hated like the mutants are

DA

...They probably should be, especially if you think for a moment about what might've gone into "privatizing world peace.

Because the FF and the Avengers are government backed. They are monitored and kept under the thumb of such groups like S.H.I.E.L.D..

Meanwhile, mutants aren't regulated. No one knows who is one and how many they are and what they can do. It's the unknown that makes people fearful.

The FF aren't. Avengers only sometimes are.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-20 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
And even then, some of the Avengers are mutants, so....

Okay, but this reasoning was used in the 1930s and 40s. Regulate them and keep them under control and know where they are. Obviously, in this case we're referring the hypothetical 'mutants', but these are some of the same arguments used historically. So is it a surprise that mutants are used as a stand-in for real life oppression?

Which is honestly one of the main persistent continuity issues with the Marvel universe, and the reason it's a good thing the X-Men movie continuity is entirely separate from the MCU.

It also doesn't make subbing in people with dangerous superpowers for actual minorities any less stupid.

AYART

Thank you!

I'd forgotten about those Super Special Mutants. But yes, total agreement here. That's why individual citizens are generally not allowed to own nuclear weapons as part of their personal arson - because really? You expect to be able to trust every Tom, Dick, and Harry with that much power?

And for what it's worth, I totally agree with you re: the property damage and feuding.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-21 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
Well we got a prime example this week about how you shouldn't be able to trust any Tom, Dick, and Harry with even regular high powered weapsons. Unfortunately 300 RL people are dead as a result of that lesson.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-20 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe because they didn't choose to have a power that could wipe out whole cities?
Someone having the potential to hurt someone else isn't as scarier as someone trying to create weapons to hurt others imo.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-20 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, it is.

You have to choose to make a weapon to hurt others, and it requires a great deal of skill, education, and effort to do so. Destructive mutations, on the other hand, are consistently shown as pretty effortless to wield, and most dangerous mutations can be dangerous without the conscious choice of the person who has them.

if this thread has proved one thing, it's that if mutants did exist in real life the way they're treated wouldn't be much different than the way they're treated in the comics

For very good reasons, but you carry on pretending that it's about OMGOPPRESSEDHARMLESSMINORITIES, hon.
