That's why try as I might and I keep on trying back into the comics every other year or so, I can't get into X-Men. I keep on thinking that the premise is ridiculous. Mutants fighting for mutant kind and getting ticked at humanity for not excepting them while another mutant is going on a killing spree with their mind and no one can stop them. Ugh. No.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-19 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)...They probably should be, especially if you think for a moment about what might've gone into "privatizing world peace.

Meanwhile, mutants aren't regulated. No one knows who is one and how many they are and what they can do. It's the unknown that makes people fearful.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-20 04:40 am (UTC)(link)Okay, but this reasoning was used in the 1930s and 40s. Regulate them and keep them under control and know where they are. Obviously, in this case we're referring the hypothetical 'mutants', but these are some of the same arguments used historically. So is it a surprise that mutants are used as a stand-in for real life oppression?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-20 01:31 am (UTC)(link)It also doesn't make subbing in people with dangerous superpowers for actual minorities any less stupid.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-19 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)Thank you!
I'd forgotten about those Super Special Mutants. But yes, total agreement here. That's why individual citizens are generally not allowed to own nuclear weapons as part of their personal arson - because really? You expect to be able to trust every Tom, Dick, and Harry with that much power?
And for what it's worth, I totally agree with you re: the property damage and feuding.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-20 12:03 am (UTC)(link)Someone having the potential to hurt someone else isn't as scarier as someone trying to create weapons to hurt others imo.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-20 01:34 am (UTC)(link)You have to choose to make a weapon to hurt others, and it requires a great deal of skill, education, and effort to do so. Destructive mutations, on the other hand, are consistently shown as pretty effortless to wield, and most dangerous mutations can be dangerous without the conscious choice of the person who has them.
