Some form of magic exists Even if the story is set in the 'real world', there will probably be one of my many characters who can travel between universes involved eventually.
Characters who look like they'd be stoic and end up being dorks How else do you describe a character who is a mercenary, top class, incredibly strong, and at one point learns to do something awesome, gawps, then squeals "I'm so COOL!"
Incredibly powerful and probably insane female villain. With the spectrum going from talented magic user with a fucked up world view to a Goddess that was driven insane.

And if the story is fanfic, nightmares crop up a lot. Never in original works.

Omg that second one is my favorite thing ever, I can't write straight up stoic/serious characters anymore, they always have to have a secret (or not-so-secret) dorky side
