Creator Thumbprints
Mine are:
Pretty boys- While I do work hard to make them all dynamic characters in their own right. In all of my works I like to have that one boy who's a "pretty boy" (at least usually according to my tastes). It's just something I like.
Powers/Magic based on the creative arts- I like the idea of magic based on the arts or creative expression of some kind.
Big (often screwed up) Family the story revolves around- All of my stories have at least one big family that the story has some focus on and explores the dynamics (and issues) of. I just find that interesting. Many of them are Big Screwed Up Families.
At least one character that is on the autistic spectrum- I like to create one character in almost every work who is on the ASD spectrum in some form. I also make them all unique in their symptoms, obsessions , quirks and personality, because I dislike having one stereotype. I want variety.
fantasy elements- All of my stories are at least a little bit fantasy in some form.

Characters who look like they'd be stoic and end up being dorks How else do you describe a character who is a mercenary, top class, incredibly strong, and at one point learns to do something awesome, gawps, then squeals "I'm so COOL!"
Incredibly powerful and probably insane female villain. With the spectrum going from talented magic user with a fucked up world view to a Goddess that was driven insane.
And if the story is fanfic, nightmares crop up a lot. Never in original works.

Re: Creator Thumbprints
time travel/alternate dimensions - i love the "what if"s and struggle between free will and predestined events, and the balance between changing future events/being unable to avoid them; it's like my own little "fuck you" to all the prophecies played completely straight in the fantasy genre
enemies becoming allies AND allies becoming enemies - usually the big bads of my stories used to be childhood friends/very close to the heroes when they were younger
emperors of russia/faux!russia - this is probably my most WTF SELF quirk; i almost always include royalty/heads of state and i almost always include some version of fantasy and/or post apocalyptic Russia and the two ALWAYS combine
complicated backstories in which everyone knows everyone in some convoluted and/or are the reincarnation of someone who knew someone - yeah...
Re: Creator Thumbprints
Ohhh alternate dimensions sound cool. I personally have an addiction to AUs myself, with my main work involving a canon AU, and I have a personal AU that combines all my works in one world.
I like the idea of enemies having roots in characters pasts and switching sides. I have a few instances if big bads having ties to the protagonists. In one work that focuses on a particular family , the big antagonists turn out to be the (distant) father of the heroes, and the uncle(not on the same side though, they are different kinds of antagonist/villain).
Does that mean your works have political subplots? Politics are always fun in fiction even though I avoid them IRL.
Backstories are great, the more complicated the better!

Re: Creator Thumbprints
Complicated sibling relationships are something I do a lot too. Hell I have one story, where the protagonist and antagonist (half siblings) have a very complex relationship that can't be summed up as "enemies" or "friendly".

* Some majorly screwed up (family) past for at least one character.
* Couples are somewhat oblivious to actually being couples.
* Smart pets. Really smart pets.
* Fantasy elements, if not a fantasy story.
Fan Fic:
* Nightmares. Lots and lots and lots of nightmares.
Re: Creator Thumbprints
Re: Creator Thumbprints
Now I am starting to wonder if there is something about fanfic that is good for nightmares.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-20 12:13 am (UTC)(link)-noticeably pockmarked characters
-supernatural elements treated in a low-key way
- lots of lesbians
- sexy banter
Re: Creator Thumbprints
Eeep I forgot a few
Genderflips of Common Dynamics: I like to genderflip common dynamics like the protective older brother and the female character who gets captured (although no matter the gender of my 'captured character' they always pull their own weight)
Kinky/Masochistic Guy : IDEK with this one
Road Trips : I don't have these in every story but I do really enjoy them and have them in at least a few
Idealistic/Plucky Sheltered Girl Finally Experiencing Freedom(and growing up/maturing) OR girl who a people pleaser/pushover and learns to grow out of it- This is something I use every now and then because both of these are based somewhat on my own experiences. Now granted I certainly don't make the former ANNOYINGLY idealistic/innocent and actually acknowledged that innocent doesn't ALWAYS mean pure and good. Immaturity is a flaw and isn't always pretty. Also I think that I have a boy version of the former with on of mine (Toby)
Re: Creator Thumbprints
Also, if left unbeta'd, random tense changes and long, run-on sentences.
Otherwise, everything is genre and fandom specific.

Re: Creator Thumbprints
(Anonymous) 2014-07-20 02:53 am (UTC)(link)- Big screwed up families and screwed up families consisting of only two or three people. I have no middle ground, apparently.
- Characters (almost always male) who are nice, funny, sarcastic, and dealing with the effects of PTSD and/or mental trauma.
- Characters who are both very cold and ruthlessly efficient, to a detrimental point.
- Lots of relationship banter. Romantic, platonic, familial, whatever, just give me more banter.
- Aliens always exist, even if they're not specifically what I'm writing about. Even if it's a modern day family drama? Joke's on you, reader, aliens made contact with humans in the 1970s, they're around somewhere. (All my main stories are set in one universe.)
