I've always kind of related to Mary.

Then again, as I wrote as a general response, I've only just seen this & the 2005 adaptation for the first time this past week. I read the book 3 years ago and I don't recall book Mary being nearly so annoying and pedantic as either adaptation portrays her.

I really just liked/identified with her because Lizzy talks about how adequate she is. Nothing special, not particularly talented in any one area, she's just kind of there.

I liked Mary too. I always just sort of her as quiet and studious, never annoying or pedantic. In fact, she's probably the smartest one, as she seems to do her best to stay out of all the nonsense.

"Mary wished to say something sensible but knew not how." (Chapter 2)

Doesn't exactly lead credence to her being the smart one.

She definitely is the preachy one, though.

Clearly, I'm not the smart one either...

Er... that is a very generous take on her character, but it's not very accurate. She is studious, but it doesn't make her the smart one. Or rather, I guess it depends on how you define smart. She's socially awkward and lacks common sense. Most of her learning is very tightly focused and impractical.

One version of P&P I'd read was the Penguin Classic Comic from way back in the day and Mary says absolutely nothing. She's there in the background and didn't even get named. Of course a lot gets left out to turn a full novel into a skinny pocket comic but I had to grow up some and get the full version before I figured her out. Meh, at least a little kid got introduced to some good books.
