I liked Mary too. I always just sort of her as quiet and studious, never annoying or pedantic. In fact, she's probably the smartest one, as she seems to do her best to stay out of all the nonsense.

Er... that is a very generous take on her character, but it's not very accurate. She is studious, but it doesn't make her the smart one. Or rather, I guess it depends on how you define smart. She's socially awkward and lacks common sense. Most of her learning is very tightly focused and impractical.
