Canada

- "It's a small country!" Nope.

- "It's cold everywhere and everyone speaks French!" Nope.

- "Mounted Police!" Apparently this really is a thing, but I've yet to see one.

- "Moose!" No, but there was Elk on a menu once. However, it was a really country cottage town.

People think Canada is a small country? What.

Re: Canada

(Anonymous) 2014-07-19 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. Apparently they have never looked at a map. Because, no.

Wow. Maybe they meant that the population was small for a country of that size? That would make a bit more sense. Thats what I'm going to choose to believe, anyway.

Probably, OR they were thinking of the territories versus the actual provinces. Which still doesn't make perfect sense, but okay.

population/density wise it kind of is though

I'd bet money on population being what anyone calling Canada "small" is talking about. :/

And, everyone is so polite! People are people. There are really nice, and really rude people everywhere.

Pretty much.

To be fair, we do apologize a lot and are generally polite in the least expected places. I live in Toronto and take public transit. It's a nightmare. But people usually apologize if they bump into you and they do say "thank you" to the driver when they get on and off.

I've seen mounties during parades in Ottawa, so that was just for ceremonial purposes.

Mounted police, or RCMP on horses? Because I've seen both, and not just the Musical Ride.

And yep, anywhere people hunt, there's moose. I can get moose at two of my local butchers.

The "cold in summer" thing is weird, though, because if you look at a map you'll see that a large chunk of the country is south of most of the border US states.

The only Mounties I see are on my school campus. They're always riding bikes. Though during the Olympics, there were Mounties in red all over the place, and on TV. It's just their ceremonial garb, apparently.

Though they did buy up a bunch of horses from my hometown's closed mounted unit. That was pretty nifty.

I see mounted police a lot in downtown Toronto during nice weather. It's because of all the traffic (and construction) that it's easier for police to respond to emergencies on a horse than trying to get through the traffic in a car. There are still a lot on bicycles, but I think a horse is still faster.

I also assumed people that thought Canada was small meant that it was small in population size. Because it's clearly a huge ass country physically.

I'll add that we all don't say "Eh!" I've heard it a few times, but mostly I hear "buddy" used a lot.

And not everyone is hockey obsessed up here. We do like other sports too. Granted there are a lot of people who like hockey, but not everyone comes out of the womb with knowledge about it. I know quite a few people who hate it.
