I've always had a bit of a hard time with this version's Jane myself. Partly I think because the first version I ever watched was the old 1940 black and white version, and while I know there was oh so much they got wrong in that one, some of those actors still stick in my mind as my metal images of those characters. Maureen O'Sullivan played Jane, and she was absolutely lovely.

While the BBC version of the secret is the best (IMO), I do have a great fondness for the 1940 Garson/Olivier version. I particularly liked the Caroline Bingley in that version - and I've always loved Laurence Olivier. <3

I agree. I definitely think the BBC version is the best overall, but there is a lot about the 1940 version I like, particularly the actors. Laurence Olivier was Darcy. And I've always loved Greer Garson's Elizabeth, even though I understand the argument that she was too old for the role. And yes, Frieda Inescort as Caroline Bingley was absolutely perfect.
