I saw it on Netflix and it was one of those shows I had to shotgun all the eps because I liked the style so much; but I've always loved Whedon's "quirky world-building meets mile-a-minute smartassery with some fights thrown in" thing. Everyone I've introduced to Firefly/Serenity ate it up in the same fashion and wished for more eps, but I agree with OP - Buffy and Angel both went off the rails eventually and Dollhouse was borked from the get-go, so it probably would've been a matter of time before Firefly did some stupid shit, too.
