I can sympathize with the people who act like that though. I get annoyed at the opposite too where people act like it's impossible to like something and criticize it at the same time. I don't know how many times I've had people go "well, okay, you don't like it and that's fine but..." when I point out an issue I have with a movie or whatever only for me to go "oh no, I love this movie!"
But anyway, you're right that there's no obligation to be active. People enjoy being a passive audience and that's okay.
Re: Fandom Confessions!
Heck even if you don't actually study film and television you are still allowed to just mindlessly watch it, there is a reason reality shows and sitcoms do well, because the majority turn on their television to switch off the world, not to be critical of it. (with the obvious exception of documentaries and the news)
Not that either side is better than the other, or that you shouldn't at least think about what kind of media you consume and which message it is sending out, but you don't have to do that at all times and you sure as hell don't have to feel guilty for just passively consume any kind of media. As long as no one is actually forced or hurt in the making of your media, what is the harm.
yes I know representation matters, and it is important, but television and films tends to reflect the views of the world, so if we change society then film/tv will do the same. Not that it wouldn't be wonderful if film/tv started, but they are for the most part comercial and they will not take a at least in their mind huge leap or change without being absolutely sure they will earn money from it. This is where I would go into a long rant about public broadcasting and state funded films and how they differ from their comercial counterparts, but this go really long.Re: Fandom Confessions!

(Anonymous) 2014-07-21 01:42 am (UTC)(link)I also dislike the idea of the "superior reader." To be a "superior reader," you have to be able to go into great detail about why you like or dislike something, and you have to critique it and deconstruct it and be able to articulate anything and everything that's problematic about it. It's basically the whole "actively consume media" thing, but with the added conceit of "you are inferior if you passively consume something."
