Every once in a while I run into this tumblr post that goes "Why would you want to be a passive consumer of media??" or something similar, and I just really want to punch whoever wrote that. If you don't get why someone would just want to watch a show/movie/read a book/etc to wind down and decompress, instead of expending energy and peace of mind complaining in a blog that no one will see, I think you have less problems than you think you do.

I think it's kind of sad that "active" equals "negative" here. I understand why, I'm not criticizing. It's just sad that so many people have a hard time finding the happy, positive sides of fandom that they want.

Well, the post itself did imply that being 'active' meant being critical and "examining the text closely" and similar things. Which is not something that I think is wrong, I just wish that poster understood that there are completely valid reasons not to WANT to do that sort of stuff.

Yeah I figured the post did that. I see that attitude a lot, that somehow you're not being an active audience unless you're criticizing the media. But I examine the text closely and come up with things to praise all the time. I prefer looking at what was done right. I do complain sometimes but I love being able to say "I adore what they did with this female character and here's why". But there's this cynical attitude out there that if you're not spending more time on complaints than praise then you're blind to the problems and not contributing to improving things in any way.

I can sympathize with the people who act like that though. I get annoyed at the opposite too where people act like it's impossible to like something and criticize it at the same time. I don't know how many times I've had people go "well, okay, you don't like it and that's fine but..." when I point out an issue I have with a movie or whatever only for me to go "oh no, I love this movie!"

But anyway, you're right that there's no obligation to be active. People enjoy being a passive audience and that's okay.

I think I once commented on that post because it annoyed me, because personally I study this shit, sometimes I just wanna watch a film or television show and not think about anything deeper than who is hot and laugh at jokes...

Heck even if you don't actually study film and television you are still allowed to just mindlessly watch it, there is a reason reality shows and sitcoms do well, because the majority turn on their television to switch off the world, not to be critical of it. (with the obvious exception of documentaries and the news)

Not that either side is better than the other, or that you shouldn't at least think about what kind of media you consume and which message it is sending out, but you don't have to do that at all times and you sure as hell don't have to feel guilty for just passively consume any kind of media. As long as no one is actually forced or hurt in the making of your media, what is the harm.

yes I know representation matters, and it is important, but television and films tends to reflect the views of the world, so if we change society then film/tv will do the same. Not that it wouldn't be wonderful if film/tv started, but they are for the most part comercial and they will not take a at least in their mind huge leap or change without being absolutely sure they will earn money from it. This is where I would go into a long rant about public broadcasting and state funded films and how they differ from their comercial counterparts, but this go really long.

I don't even think "passive" consumers of media exist. Everybody I know talks about TV shows they watch. "Hey did you see ___?" "What do you think about that plot twist?" "I really liked how they developed that character." I've even met shippers who didn't know they were shippers. The difference is they don't read hours worth of meta, think of headcanons, write and read fic, etc. Actually, I think the difference might be a pretty thin line.

(I'm not arguing with you, ftr. I don't see that post a lot but I agree with you.)

The thing is that usually when someone talks about "passive" consumption of media, they're specifically talking about being uncritical. Gushing happily over a ship or saying "I liked this plot twist" or even just "I didn't like this plot twist" is still "passive" to them, because it doesn't involve true critique.

I dislike that attitude too.

I also dislike the idea of the "superior reader." To be a "superior reader," you have to be able to go into great detail about why you like or dislike something, and you have to critique it and deconstruct it and be able to articulate anything and everything that's problematic about it. It's basically the whole "actively consume media" thing, but with the added conceit of "you are inferior if you passively consume something."

I've seen that too, and I just...yeah. I really can't bring myself to care that hard anymore, I'm completely burned out. So yeah, I'm going to watch shows about white men and I'm probably going to ship them and I genuinely can't care anymore if someone has an issue with that.
