I'll admit, I lost it at the broadsword pun.

And I'm still trying to figure out what exactly viragosity means.

[identity profile] andy-longwood.livejournal.com 2007-12-04 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
Never fear! I wrote an entry (http://andy-longwood.livejournal.com/223662.html) on it.

Virago(n): A woman of extraordinary stature, strength, and courage; a woman who has the robust body and masculine mind of a man; a female warrior.

Ultimately, it's a fancy way of saying "warrior babe." It's been useful in helping me to get my dorky male friends to understand that just because I aspire to be knighted, that doesn't mean I'm transsexual.

[identity profile] cftfic.livejournal.com 2007-12-04 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
O-ho. I see then.

Those sorts of girls are badass. >_> I wouldn't quite call it a "fetish" per se because I think that'd be misusing the term, but... hot. =O

Badass chicks are my weakness~

[identity profile] andy-longwood.livejournal.com 2007-12-04 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
Badass chicks are my heroes. Heroines. Yay gender-appropriate pronouns.

You could arguably use the word "fetish" to describe anything which you have a particular sense of fascination for, be it sexual or not. Or something that you believe has superpowers, if we're going by the anthropological use of fetishism.

My nerd is showing. =D

[identity profile] cftfic.livejournal.com 2007-12-04 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
Well hey, you learn something new every day. >_>

And... now that I think about it, thinking about pretty much every one of my major female original characters? They're pretty much all various degrees of that "badass warrior chick" image, come to think of it XD; Who knew? =O

[identity profile] andy-longwood.livejournal.com 2007-12-04 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
Lately, only a few of mine are, but I've been on a bout of angst and child OCs. I definitely enjoy writing my warrior babes, outside of current context.

[identity profile] cftfic.livejournal.com 2007-12-04 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
Well I haven't been doing much original content lately, and most of them are for various RPs that have since died off. But yeah, thinking back on it? XD; I mean the closest thing you had to non-warrior-babe was an awesome coldblooded bitch sorceress who could melt someone's face with a thought. >_>

...this is actually sort of interesting now that I think about it XD; I mean, I'm a guy, but I, uh, apparently really enjoy creating awesome and tough female characters and RPing as them too I wonder what that says about me.

Whodathunk?

[identity profile] andy-longwood.livejournal.com 2007-12-04 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
You know, I'm pretty much on the other end of the scale right now. Lately I've had the most fun playing very nurturing, caring male characters who tend towards pacifism or the sidelines during combat and are motivated by devotion to family members, usually children or younger siblings. I've never played a female character who was directly motivated by her offspring, but I know very well that I find the idea of a man who's good with kids and loves his children more overtly attractive than a woman who is. I've had my concept of gender influenced enough by my culture to take women who are good with kids more for granted.

[identity profile] cftfic.livejournal.com 2007-12-04 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
Haha, that's... SORT of reminiscent of one of the male characters I played (actually the only male character I've played recently, come to think of it XD; ) Caring in a rather... snarky way. Not quite a family man, but loved kids. I'm in total agreement that family-oriented guys are great, though XD;

You ever play Soul Calibur? That's sort of one of the things I adoooore about Sophitia's story on both ends. She's a badass warrior chick who has her adventure and fights evil, then comes home to settle down. Has a couple of kids... until remnants of the evil she fought against starts to threaten her family. So, she goes to kick its ass again to protect her husband and children, and I just love that so much XD; Yay for badass moms. What I also love is that her husband is totally cool with it, and he's actually the blacksmith who makes her sword and shield for her and agrees to stay home to protect and care for their kids while she's off kicking ass.

I wish I could find a not-dead RP in which to play these OCs, though. I did love them so ;_;

[identity profile] andy-longwood.livejournal.com 2007-12-04 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
Right now, my favorite character to play is a very gentle, loving man who's been acting as the male head of his family since his father died about five years ago in-game. His two littlest sisters are more like his children than his siblings. Now I have just as much fun playing one of his older sisters, who's stacked for combat and cold as ice ('cause it's good for her IMAGE, dammit), but still, they're an unusual set and oddly indicative of what I like in both genders. Go figure.

Sophitia rocks. =D I actually love that storyline too, the warrior babe who settles down and has a family. There's a similar storyline for two of the loudest characters that live in my head, a married couple that consists of an ex-Warrior Babe from a sword-and-sorcery universe and a techhead who serves as her cavalry. Together they fight crime! I've been writing a webcomic about them, but the story is on hiatus right now for artistic reasons. Meaning I haven't had a chance to update in a while and now all the old art makes my eyes bleed and I kind of want to fix that, but not during finals week. I used to play the wife in a dead RP a while ago, but I haven't found another one to bring her out in, which makes me sad because she really was great fun and the game really helped me to develop her character.

I love supportive relationships like the Sophia type, though, whether the woman or the man is the one kicking ass and taking names. Having something to contribute to each other is something I find really sweet in a relationship. Also stay-at-home-dads, they're cute.

[identity profile] cftfic.livejournal.com 2007-12-04 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
Hm. Well, I've got an angel sort of not-quite-obsessed with humanity who keeps on becoming a sort of father/brother figure to a bunch of mortals over the years only to continually be devastated when he outlives them as he always does... but then again he's also a badass warrior SO I GUESS THAT'S NOT ENTIRELY THE SAME THING.

Oh? That sounds really cool, I'd like to read it when you get it going again~

I just like supportive and symbiotic relationships in general, no matter the genders or gender roles of whoever's involved. (see icon) It's cuuuute and gives me the warm fuzzles.

Sigh. I miss these characters. Lousy dead RPs. ;_;

[identity profile] andy-longwood.livejournal.com 2007-12-04 04:47 am (UTC)(link)
My dude's being played in a game of Exalted. He's actually an accomplished martial artist and very physically apt, but that level of skill tends to go unnoticed in a system that basically lets you be a Super Saiyan. Hee, powergaming.

I would be happy to link you. Really, I keep telling myself that given how much I've learned about writing and comicking in general just from doing it, I shouldn't apologize at all becuase I knew this was going to be a learning experience when I started it about two years ago. Here you go, I guess? (http://thekitchensink.comicgenesis.com/) I'm going to try to wrap up the current storyline in the old art style before I switch to the newer, more anatomically correct character designs, but the old style is kind of hard for me to draw now. Meh. Yay, symbiosis. I have love in my heart for it, too. It's good to see characters that just fit together. Warm fuzzles are nice. Seconded. ;_; I wish I had more luck finding RPs that accepted OCs.

[identity profile] cftfic.livejournal.com 2007-12-04 04:57 am (UTC)(link)
Powergaming is win! Or something.

aww, is cute XD I've definitely seen worse art in webcomics; I'll look forward to the new stuff.

and god yes. I'm just now starting to test the waters of RPs after being out of fandom for quite a long time. But I'd rather put my OCs in one than just pretend to be someone else's character. at least then I can defend OOC as just another character facet I mean what

WE SHOULD START OUR OWN except not really because I have no idea how that'd work so it'd probably fail horribly like some sort of genetically defective abomination.

Alternately, holy crap, that's Daniel Radcliffe in Equus in your icon, right? I think I'm kind of relieved I didn't recognize whose ass that was until I saw the scrollover text. And kind of amused by how quickly I recognized it once I did. XD

[identity profile] cftfic.livejournal.com 2007-12-04 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. Yes it is.

I just found the picture with the BAM! on it and couldn't resist taking it >_>

[identity profile] andy-longwood.livejournal.com 2007-12-04 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
It's funny. My school's theater department did Equus this year. Which is good, because I wanted to see the play, but seeing Harry Potter naked would have made me feel kind of awkward.

[identity profile] cftfic.livejournal.com 2007-12-04 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
Oh come on like you'd have passed up the chance to see Harry's wand in person.

...I'm pretty close with most of the theater department at my college, so I'm glad WE haven't done a play like Equus, TBH. It'd be sort of bizarre seeing some of my friends naked like that. I'd be all "hey I've seen your junk dude."

[identity profile] andy-longwood.livejournal.com 2007-12-04 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
Aww, but all I can think of when I read the books or watch the movies is how tiny and cute and girly his voice was he was when he was 11. Neville's wand, on the other hand -

I'm a techie, so there's a possibility that if they needed someone for costume run crew in a pinch, I'd end up seeing peoples' junk even if we didn't do a play with nudity. I definitely saw lots of underwear backstage when I was a spot op for Gypsy, so nakedparts don't concern me too terribly much anymore. XD

[identity profile] cftfic.livejournal.com 2007-12-04 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
I can see how there'd be an added gray area, yeah. XD

And it doesn't terribly concern me, either. I mean, I play water polo, and even if there wasn't shower locker room nudity.... we're all wearing Speedos the entire time. But for some reason it seems a bit different in my mind than the prospect of being in an audience and watching a good friend cavort naked on stage.

Huh.

[identity profile] andy-longwood.livejournal.com 2007-12-04 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the audience adds to the intimidation factor, I'm sure. I dunno, I always find the nudity taboo a little weird as a conceptual thing. My last two roommates and I would change in front of each other with no problem, but this year's model dislikes exposed girlparts, so now I find myself feeling oddly self-concious about changing clothes, just in case she happens to walk into the backroom while I'm putting a shirt on. I feel much more at ease when there isn't an active taboo on it.

[identity profile] cftfic.livejournal.com 2007-12-04 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
No, you're very right, and it's sort of interesting when you think about it. Like I said, I'm totally fine when it comes to my waterpolo team and changing or speedos, but it was kind of awkward changing in my room with my roommate anywhere around back in freshman year XD

[identity profile] andy-longwood.livejournal.com 2007-12-04 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
Eh. It's much less awkward, I think, to go "Well, we have the same parts, whatever," than having to be sneaky about exposure, but my roommate is a little uncomfortable about her body image, so I think I can understand.

[identity profile] cftfic.livejournal.com 2007-12-04 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
I mean yeah, you'd think that. O.o And it should be true. I mean whether it's my teammate or my roommates, we've all got the same damn dangly bits presumably.

It's just interesting how different contexts feel more or less taboo when they really shouldn't.

... I think I'm going to appropriate that word because that is an awesome word.

Ain't it excellent? It's one of my favorites.
