Does the con have an images gallery or facebook? You could scope out whether there is a lot of cosplay of non anime characters. Or just go this year without cosplaying to check out if it is worth cosplaying there, or email the con-organizer and see what the non anime cosplay is like, or cosplay as the nearest anime equivalent of your character if there is one. Personally, I think you are right to worry and not just con-crash in US costume, if the con is very anime focused then it would be rude and antagonistic to the other goers, but there are ways of checking it out first.

Going to anime cons as a non-anime character is pretty common. I did it before, and I got nothing but positive reactions about my costume choice.

A long as you don't make a big deal about not liking anime. You are at an anime con, after all. You're going to be surrounded by people who like anime and not unreasonably assume you like it too.

Eh, every anime-focused con I've been to has at least a few US-comic cosplayers running about. You're all there to have fun, so go for it. Nobody should give you any shit over it, and if they do they have their priorities totally screwed up.

I can't even BEGIN to count how many Harley Quinn's were at A-Kon this year. And there was a small army of Deadpools. And a good handful of Loki's. A couple Caps. And then there were the metric fuckton of video game characters. And a half metric fuckton of Adventure Time.

Seriously, just go for it. You're going to be far from the only one not cosplaying someone from an anime.

Idk... I've been to large and small anime conventions, and in all cases, there was a healthy crop of Western/comic cosplay.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-21 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
You'll be fine, but I kinda hate how anime conventions have become more and more just general fandom.

It's true of all conventions though.

And it's less about the cosplayers and more about the organization, I think. Do they host panels and guests that cater only to anime (or games, comics, etc.) or have the broadened it to appeal to a wider audience?

Seriously, but, the Klingon parties at the Furry Conventions are usually Top Notch!

I made out with a guy dressed as Captain Jack Sparrow once at a con. The fact that it was an anime con didn't hurt him any.

I've never been to a con that was only ____ media. As long as you're recognizable, someone will love it. If you're not, well you're still going to make that niche character's fan pretty glad you're there as well as still look awesome (I don't have to know what a cosplay is based off of to appreciate it. Costuming is just cool).

My sister stayed at a hotel here last year that was having an anime convention, which she didn't know in advance. We went because there was a water park in the hotel, and of course, enjoyed looking at all the cosplay. There was lots I didn't recognize, since I'm not into Anime, but there was Mario, Pokemon, and Doctor Who.

The last big anime con I was at, there were people dressed as all kinds of non-anime characters. It might depend on the con, but I feel like people are pretty chill about not sticking strictly to anime cosplay.

I'm not going to say anything the others haven't, but still commenting to say just go have super fun, OP! Just as an example, my local con started as anime-centric (and still has anime in the name) but over the years, it's expanded to be something of an 'everything geeky and awesome' con, so there's panels and such on video games, live action, western animation, tabletop, and just about everything as well as anime/manga.

This year, I'm going to be cosplaying one anime/manga character (Kanzeon from Saiyuki), a gijinka costume of Yveltal from Pokemon (so still Japanese but video game), and a live-action (Morticia Addams). In the past, I've done lots of video game characters, both Japanese and western, and I've always seen plenty of others doing whatever they like (at least a dozen Doctor Who TARDIS outfits last year, and easily as many Daleks XD) and I've never felt like people were unhappy to see any of those non-anime costumes.

tl;dr - Do what you like and feel awesome in, OP.

Ooh, I'd be really interested to see what your Yveltal gijinka looks like.

[personal profile] corellianrogue 2014-07-22 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
Haha, well, right now, it looks like a bunch of pieces of fabric with no relation to each other. XD I wish I had more done than that to show off, but Morticia is getting sewn first because it's the easiest one with the fewest alterations.

Well, if you're inclined to post it when you're done, I'd love to see it. :)

It has been FOREVER, so I hope you have comment notifications turned on. XD Okay, so closer to three months than forever, I guess, but still. Local con was this last weekend, so I finally have pics of that gijinka.

We'll see how well that turns out. You can't really see the makeup, but you can see the costume, at least. I was super proud of it, even if the shoes did make my toes go numb by the end of the night.

I had forgotten about this conversation!

And, ok, I gotta say, honestly: that looks awesome! You made it all, the hat and the dress? It's so rad! (And definitely recognizable as Yveltal immediately!)

...you mean you haven't seen how many Homestuck fans have invaded cons in general?

Hey, I wanted to wear a goofy Star Trek uniform to Anime Boston a couple years ago and got dissuaded by someone I was going with. I've regretted it ever since. Especially after I saw some girl there dressed like a Vulcan and plenty of fucking PONIES.

Dress how you like. If people are mean to you, remember: they're at a fucking anime convention. If they are that kind of person, then this is probably their one chance to be mean at a person in person before retreating back to their basement and talking about how shy they are on their catty tumblr.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-22 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
anon, nobody cares. Anime cons are no longer "for anime only," and haven't been for at least four or five years. nobody will be mean to you, the worst you can expect is maybe some twelve-year-old weeb side-eyeing you - I guarantee most people won't care and you'll probably get a lot of love anyway.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-22 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
Just do it, OP! I've been to many anime cons and I've seen plenty of cosplayers dressed in non-anime costumes.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-22 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
Every time I've been at a Con, everyone is just excited to be hanging out in a fandom space.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-22 01:02 pm (UTC)(link)
My last con I attended was in a Catwoman suit and I feel like no one even recognized it or at least felt something towards it. I felt so out of place. I wish so badly that there was a better, sort of a geek convention here. We only have an anime one and it's just not fun when most of the people there are 15 years old and dress up in pink hair and school girl outfits. I used to be like that but now that I'm 7 years older and my fandoms have changed drastically... sigh. (from Finland)
