I'm not going to say anything the others haven't, but still commenting to say just go have super fun, OP! Just as an example, my local con started as anime-centric (and still has anime in the name) but over the years, it's expanded to be something of an 'everything geeky and awesome' con, so there's panels and such on video games, live action, western animation, tabletop, and just about everything as well as anime/manga.

This year, I'm going to be cosplaying one anime/manga character (Kanzeon from Saiyuki), a gijinka costume of Yveltal from Pokemon (so still Japanese but video game), and a live-action (Morticia Addams). In the past, I've done lots of video game characters, both Japanese and western, and I've always seen plenty of others doing whatever they like (at least a dozen Doctor Who TARDIS outfits last year, and easily as many Daleks XD) and I've never felt like people were unhappy to see any of those non-anime costumes.

tl;dr - Do what you like and feel awesome in, OP.

Ooh, I'd be really interested to see what your Yveltal gijinka looks like.

Haha, well, right now, it looks like a bunch of pieces of fabric with no relation to each other. XD I wish I had more done than that to show off, but Morticia is getting sewn first because it's the easiest one with the fewest alterations.

Well, if you're inclined to post it when you're done, I'd love to see it. :)

It has been FOREVER, so I hope you have comment notifications turned on. XD Okay, so closer to three months than forever, I guess, but still. Local con was this last weekend, so I finally have pics of that gijinka.

We'll see how well that turns out. You can't really see the makeup, but you can see the costume, at least. I was super proud of it, even if the shoes did make my toes go numb by the end of the night.

I had forgotten about this conversation!

And, ok, I gotta say, honestly: that looks awesome! You made it all, the hat and the dress? It's so rad! (And definitely recognizable as Yveltal immediately!)

I kept it starred in my inbox so I wouldn't forget. XD Lame, perhaps, but hey, sometimes you have to enjoy showing off the fruits of your labors, right?

And thank you! Yep, I made everything but the shoes, wig, and gloves, although I added the claws inside the gloves to make the fingers longer/pointed (hard to see at this size, but they added about inch/inch and a half to my fingers, and I added a pack of grey-blue wefts to the dark grey wig to make it fuller and to add a bit of color variation in the light to give the sort of shading effect Yveltal's smoke mane thingy has.

But the headpiece, dress, and bolero were 100% me. Dress and bolero are satin and chiffon (and flowed really well, was so happy with how that dress moved), headpiece is craft foam and paper clay mounted on a headband that I was sure would fall out as soon as I put it on, but a few bobby pins actually kept it sturdy all night.

nah, not lame! I'm glad you shared it with me :)
