Your parents let a 12 year wander an amusement park by themselves? I mean, I know it was a different time but damn. My mom would have flipped out.

Mine too. I was 12 more like 15 years ago, but my mom would NEVER have let me go around by myself.

My mother would have let me. She trusted me so much that she gave me a pair of pocket knives when I was eight.

And used them to cut my fringe off.

Awww. I envy you - my mother threw away at least two of my pocket knives. The only one I (officially) got to keep was a swiss army knife, and only because my grandfather gave it to me >_>

It's not really about trusting your child, it's about trusting the adults around them. I think my daughter is very trustworthy despite her young age but I would not let her wander a large area alone because there are a lot of shady adults out there who wouldn't hesitate to take advantage of a young child who is under no supervision.

exactly. I never felt my mom didn't trust me; she just wanted me to be safe.

I dunno, when I was 12 (2001) I probably would have been allowed to wander a park and go on rides by my self if my parent was also somewhere in the park. Like if we were down in Santa Monica shopping, it would be ok I went on a couple rides at the pier and my mom just chilled out at a table with some iced tea.

yeah, was thinking this. Maybe as an older teen, but 12?

My parents let my brother and I wander around together as kids in a totally different country.

Hell, they let us fly over there ahead of them so we could spend more time with our grandma when they could be off work.

Kids these days.

Depending on the amusement park and the area, it's not that unusual. I worked at my local amusement park a couple summers ago, and seeing unattended preteens/early teens was pretty common. There's security everywhere in most parks, and ride and shop attendants are trained to keep an eye out for skeevy people, so the biggest risk facing most kids is hurling on a ride after they stuff their faces with too much junk food.

I always laugh at these "omg your parents let you WHAT?" comments because I was allowed to go places by myself (with my little brother in tow) from age 7 for hours at a time. On buses and everything. Sure, I was a sensible little kid, though he wasn't, but it wasn't like I could have fought off a kidnapper or something. My mom was a pediatric intensive care nurse and I think she saw such sick kids all day that we were obviously fine whatever we did.

Different strokes for different folks.

Also, it depends on the amusement park and the overall situation.

And, some kids do tend to get in trouble more often than others. (Sure, if the kidnapper is one of those grab and run kind of people, there's really nothing much you can do. But from what I've heard, it's rarely like that.)

For example, my sister has twins, a boy and a girl, thirteen years old. Recently we found out that the boy has been going to a random guy's house with friends because they get get free crisps, chips, sweets and whatnot. We were all, including his twin sister, like this, "WTF!? O_O"

In short, would I let me niece roam free in an amusement park? Yep. My nephew, maybe better not...

When I was 11 and 12 I was taking afternoon trips into town to wander around shops. Then again, considering that was the end of the 80s/beginning of the 90s, culture about protecting children from danger was probably different then. I still like to think I had enough sense to take care of myself reasonably, at least for a couple of hours.
