An unpopular opinion, maybe...

(Anonymous) 2014-07-21 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
But I'm going to say that I'm okay with fandom feeling protective about and identifying with black female characters, it makes for a refreshing change. Especially since it's not like this ONLY happens to black female characters.

If you identify with a sadist that murdered hundreds of infants, you got some things you need to work out.

Yes, I expected that sort of kneejerk response. The problem is, identifying with a character is a lot more complicated than that. It doesn't mean you see yourself mirrored in every single thought or action. That's why people don't only identify with characters who've only done heroic, selfless things. We might identify with Walter White because we see that he's a very ordinary man who, through a series of events that aren't always in his control, loses his way and fucks up his life and his family's life very, very badly. And even though we've never smoked meth never mind manufactured it or sold it, we might understand how awful that would be because we've made mistakes too, albeit far less serious ones.

It's about small details. Backstories. Motivations. Empathy. And maybe it's sometimes about seeing how badly wrong things could go for a person and knowing that something bad could also happen to us, too.

And FYI? I have no idea what this fandom is or who this character is.

I agree. I didn't particularly like the character, but it was a refreshing change that fandom turned her into a woobie after witnessing too many fandoms woobify white dudes and fandoms where black women characters just happened to be the most unpopular ones. But, at this point, if you root for any black character, the segment of fandom that hates ~SJWs~ is going to cry foul.

except most people who aren't SJWs don't put race as some #1 priority to care about before anything else

so people who hate SJWs aren't going to complain unless the SJW makes it about race to begin with, seriously.

That same fandom also loved the Kathy Bates character, it seems par for the course for that fandom.

That's what I thought. Acting like this is something the only happens with characters who are black and female didn't sound accurate.

Not really anyone who liked her was attacked and called a racist.

I love many villainous characters and I think it's always a good thing that people want to identify/discuss characters that they think are well-written. Where people lose my support, though, is when they accuse people who write criticism of being racists and/or misogynists.

There's no denying that black female characters get a lot of hate. But any well-written character will have both good and bad points. Any well-written character is also someone who (in my opinion) can be both legitimately liked and disliked (just like in real life, no one is liked by EVERYONE).

As long as people defend their favorite characters by looking at people's arguments. Say, for example, by arguing that a particular point isn't really legitimate for X reason, then I'm cool with them.

But using personal attacks against someone who merely critiques is a big NO in my book. Someone who actually says something that's misogynistic, racist, or homophobic definitely should be called out though. But expressing general dislike or saying a particular element didn't work for them =/= bigotry.

All said, character will never matter to me more than a real person and the people in fandom who forget this are those who I can't take seriously.

You get the point. Just correcting a typo.

It always makes me super happy to run into thoughtful, eloquent fans of villains. And I couldn't agree more.

Probably not an unpopular opinion. It's the same reasoning that keeps people from criticizing Obama.
