Re: An unpopular opinion, maybe...

I love many villainous characters and I think it's always a good thing that people want to identify/discuss characters that they think are well-written. Where people lose my support, though, is when they accuse people who write criticism of being racists and/or misogynists.

There's no denying that black female characters get a lot of hate. But any well-written character will have both good and bad points. Any well-written character is also someone who (in my opinion) can be both legitimately liked and disliked (just like in real life, no one is liked by EVERYONE).

As long as people defend their favorite characters by looking at people's arguments. Say, for example, by arguing that a particular point isn't really legitimate for X reason, then I'm cool with them.

But using personal attacks against someone who merely critiques is a big NO in my book. Someone who actually says something that's misogynistic, racist, or homophobic definitely should be called out though. But expressing general dislike or saying a particular element didn't work for them =/= bigotry.

All said, character will never matter to me more than a real person and the people in fandom who forget this are those who I can't take seriously.

You get the point. Just correcting a typo.

DA

It always makes me super happy to run into thoughtful, eloquent fans of villains. And I couldn't agree more.
