This. Because chances are that the person coming out might be nervous or scared or worried about whether or not their announcement will radically alter their relationship to the person they're telling, and just deflating their anxiety with an insensitive (at best) response just seems... unkind.

Yeah...I think it maybe works if it's your parent (AND they're also being supportive), but other than that, I wouldn't say it.

When one of my friends came out to his grandmother, her response was somewhat along the lines of, "Oh, sweetie, why do you think I keep trying to get you to help me redecorate the parlor?"

Which was kind of cute coming from someone's 80-year-old Lutheran grandma, but yeah, probably not the best example for everyday conversation.
