Do you knit or crochet, or have friends whom you can pay to do so for you? There are scads of free bag patterns on Ravelry and other sites.

I think this is one of those things that sounds like a nice idea in theory, but in practice I'd be reluctant to carry canned goods and packages of raw chicken in a knit/crochet bag, both because of weight concerns AND the possibility of ruining it if something breaks/leaks or the weight stretches it out.

NAYRT, but for months now I've been carrying stuff like five pounds of canned cat food in my knitted bag (uh, not the entire time, but you know what I mean), and it hasn't stretched out or broken yet. 100% cotton yarn can be pretty resilient. The handles on most patterns aren't very comfortable for carrying that much weight, though.

They're supposed to stretch; the patterns plan for it. And cotton dishcloth yarn is both durable as hell and machine washable.
