reusable grocery bags

(Anonymous) 2014-07-22 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey FS, my sister is moving to Austin, where they've apparently banned plastic bags! Any good suggestions for neat/useful totes for grocery shopping? I'd like to get her some. Thanks!

Most grocery stores sell them, and they seem to be given out fairly often by companies promoting something. My county only taxes plastic bags (you have to pay 5 cents) and since that law came into effect, we've accumulated a whole reusable shopping bag full of reusable shopping bags.

Most big chain stores (Wal Mart, Target, etc.) sell them, but the designs are usually somewhat generic with the store name/logo splashed all over them. If you're looking for something prettier (but more expensive), check out Etsy.

Burlap bags are pretty useful because they don't take much space when folded. But they don't have much volume, so I don't know if they're good for groceries.

If you or your sister still have plastic bags you can always make reusable totes from them! All you need are plastic bags (about 6 per tote), parchment paper, and an iron. You can even sew them together too if you want to do more than melt the plastic together. I did this with a few Target and King Soopers bags years ago, but I don't know what happened to them.

Something like this:

Seriously: especially if she's shopping for a family, she needs something decent but nearly disposable; something that won't be a real loss if the orange juice leaks. Something cheap.

Most stores have bags for 99 cents. You can toss them in the back of the car and not worry if they get dirty.

I'm not saying don't get her a nice tote as a present! I'm saying don't expect it to be used for hardcore shopping.

DA

If shopping for a family, I would recommend a box or boxes. Milk crates are good, too. Easier to carry, can hold more items, stackable for easy transport.

Do you knit or crochet, or have friends whom you can pay to do so for you? There are scads of free bag patterns on Ravelry and other sites.

I think this is one of those things that sounds like a nice idea in theory, but in practice I'd be reluctant to carry canned goods and packages of raw chicken in a knit/crochet bag, both because of weight concerns AND the possibility of ruining it if something breaks/leaks or the weight stretches it out.

For groceries, make sure to get one that's insulated with a zipper closure. I love them for things from the fridge and freezer aisles. For other stuff we get the ones offered by the store, like others have said. I also keep one of those nylon roll up ones in my purse in case I'm out picking up a few errands. Mine's shaped like a watermelon slice and super cute. The strawberry ones are cute too.

Seconding insulated bags for cold/frozen goods. If she has to travel far or make other stops before getting home, it's a good bag to have on hand.

Also, most groceries sell their own bags with Grocerytm logos all over it. And you can always scour those company sponsor info stands at festivals and cons and such since they'll usually have branded swag on hand like reusable shopping bags.

Oh. And dollar stores.

Insulated for cold groceries. Other than that, Walmart sells them with a logo on them for only .50. Of course if you want to get her something nicer, you can, but lots of stores sell them for cheap.

Ones with good straps that can handle heavy stuff, plastic ones that can handle wet stuff, insulated ones that can handle cold stuff, big ones and small ones.

Also, most stores will give you paper bags if you forget yours at home. :D

i get mine from the different stores themselves. i like canvas ones are the best because they're strong but i don't usually see them around anymore. i've seen some non-canvas ones that are still very strong, you just want to make sure the strap won't break or it won't get a hole in it while she's carrying heavy stuff. i also like ones with flat bottoms

I have some by Baggu and Envirosax and I love them. A little pricier than the $0.99 ones at the grocery store, but they're machine washable and sturdy as hell. The Baggu ones, especially - they each hold up to 25lbs. I cram mine full and I've never had one split on me. Also try reuseit.

If you buy more than one bottle of wine at Kroger, they often put it in a free re-usable wine bag. So buy some wine and cut the little wine dividers out. LOL The ones my Kroger uses are really pretty too with flowers on them.

Personally, I think while those little bags you can fold up and put into their tiny pouch are nice for smaller shopping trips, I have found that I prefer a basket - mostly because the weight is easier to distribute and fragile things don't get squashed as easily.

Just get whatever bags they sell at the grocery store?

The one that says "I like big books and I cannot lie." I've been meaning to buy one for my sister for like two years now. Damn itttttttt, why can't I ever remember it in time for a holiday??

If you've got a Trader Joe's nearby, their bags are usually cute, large, and durable.

I'm in Los Angeles - plastic bags are banned, and paper bags are typically a dime each. For most of the stores I've been in, those things are actually pretty tough, so in a pinch, those will do just fine.
