Seriously: especially if she's shopping for a family, she needs something decent but nearly disposable; something that won't be a real loss if the orange juice leaks. Something cheap.

Most stores have bags for 99 cents. You can toss them in the back of the car and not worry if they get dirty.

I'm not saying don't get her a nice tote as a present! I'm saying don't expect it to be used for hardcore shopping.

I do all my shopping with reusable bags and it's sometimes 'hardcore'.... ?

Are all the bags you get really flimsy and easy to ruin or something?

If shopping for a family, I would recommend a box or boxes. Milk crates are good, too. Easier to carry, can hold more items, stackable for easy transport.

For me they definitely aren't easier. They're a lot more cumbersome. Bags are harder on my hands but I can carry more at once without worrying about how I'm going to open the door or not trip on something.

I agree with Chard that they don't work for some things, but boxes with handles in them are often better to me than plastic bags.

But it's not very practical to carry milk crates or boxes with you into the store so that the cashier can bag up your purchases, which is likely what the OP will need.

okay but a "nice" bag probably isn't best for weekly shopping trips

None of my bags are nice (the priciest one was like a dollar fifty?) and they can all be washed no problem.
