If shopping for a family, I would recommend a box or boxes. Milk crates are good, too. Easier to carry, can hold more items, stackable for easy transport.

For me they definitely aren't easier. They're a lot more cumbersome. Bags are harder on my hands but I can carry more at once without worrying about how I'm going to open the door or not trip on something.

I agree with Chard that they don't work for some things, but boxes with handles in them are often better to me than plastic bags.

But it's not very practical to carry milk crates or boxes with you into the store so that the cashier can bag up your purchases, which is likely what the OP will need.
