I have no idea who this is so I just want to say he looks like if John Constantine had a teen goth phase.

He probably would have been if he wasn't born in the era of punk instead, lets be honest.

I missed out on the dirt surrounding the band's break-up. Please fill me in, OP!

yeah I want to know too!!!

OP here

Right from the moment they broke up it was, in the way some people didn't say anything (Ray) and how some people went on a spiel how wonderful it had been but how done they really were (Gerard) made it very obvious that one specific person had pulled the plug. Aka Gerard. Which had already made me kind of angry and sad.

But now, basically what happened was that in a recent interview with Kerrang! he mentioned that right from the start he only wanted to make 3 albums with My Chem. Which I personally find all kinds of ridiculous but that's Gerard for you so what you gonna do, right? Anyone, he mentioned that the only reason they even made Danger Days was for the money and because they were pressured to release another album by their record company. Let's be real, their 2/3 year hiatus after TBP made most fans think they were done for anyway.
Now I get what he's saying that sometimes you do shit for money whether you like it or not, but I honestly think he should have kept that bit to himself. A lot of people really liked that album, had missed them a lot and were really excited about a new tour, new music, new merch. New everything basically. And now he's basically throwing it out of the window and saying it's not really his. That it never really meant anything to him at all.
For years he's mentioned doing anything for the fans and now it's like he's taking it back. In interviews where My Chem is mentioned he's being very dismissive in my opinion, about the band, the members and the fans. Obviously I could be reading him wrong but yeah.
Combine that with the way they sort of fell of the map after DD and the weird way they released the Conventional Weapons tracks (in hindsight that was probably all for the money too) and the unsure way they announced MCR5 it just pisses me off. They made a lot of people excited only to disappear completely and it seems to be mostly his fault. I'm really disappointed to be honest.

As a big fan of the band, the bait and switch of the break up was disappointing. But at the same time, I think Gerard has every right to decide how far he wants to take MCR, and to pursue other artistic projects. Especially since the huge success and then backlash against the band must make it even more difficult to evolve musically when they're working under that name.

OP again.
I totally agree, if it's not fun anymore you should just stop. But the way things are being handled right now just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. If he only ever planned to make three albums he should have said so from the get-go. Instead of kind of disappearing and then dragging his feet into making a new album. And they'd already started promoting MCR5 /before/ they called it quits. Which psyched up a lot of people so that was kind of mean.

dang! Danger Days is like my favorite album by them anyway!!

I always felt like Danger Days was their weakest album, and this kinda solidifies it for me. I'll stick to the first three and continue to pretend that the 4th doesn't exist

Well, damn. I hadn't heard about his three album idea, but setting an arbitrary number on something like that doesn't really make sense to me. I also had no idea what the other guys said about the break-up, so I wasn't sure if it was mutual or... or what. I love their music, but I'm not deep into the fandom so I hear almost ZERO gossip. That's nice for a lot of reasons, but not so great when something happens and I have no idea what's going on behind the scenes. I was pleased about DD, but disappointed there didn't seem to be more albums/tours in the works. But I really can't complain too much, I went to a few concerts and feel like I got more than my fair share of fun.

I respect that he'd like to distance himself from the band, though. He's not even 40 yet and has a lot of living to do. You don't want to JUST be that guy from that band and nothing else, and if he didn't push hard to separate himself from his past accomplishments, he'd never succeed in moving on.

Thanks for coming back OP! I checked today hoping you would. :)

In my experience in MCR fandom, I've learned never to trust anything Gerard says, because he'll eventually change his story. Don't dwell on it too much, OP. Think about it like this: they're not going to end up like Motley Crue or some other rock band-turned-has beens.

Also, tbh Danger Days was fun but like... eh to me. It seemed like the magic was about to be gone, so IMO it was a good way to end the saga. But I'm also a fan of harder and heavier music, so I've always preferred their first two albums.
