I'm very uncomfortable with that first line of logic as I have literally heard it in my lifetime for people who are of Middle Eastern descent and the reasoning being, "But they could be terrorists!"

Yeah but anyone can access a plane or a bomb. Not just anyone can access those things with only the power of their minds.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-23 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
And? Do you think that saying that stops people from saying it when you point it out?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-23 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
No but you can't just not say unrelated things because someone might be racist about it.

Just look at the Oklahoma City bomber. But does anyone remember him in these conversation? Noooo...

It actually first made me think of the registry of people with mental illnesses that's been proposed before (usually after a shooting when people want to make the conversation about mental illness instead of gun control rather than in addition to).

Yeah but bipolar disorder doesn't make you shoot fire out of your hands.

I definitely disagree with the registry idea.

In real life I can't think of anything that people are born with/develop that should have a registry.

I can think of a few things, like a habit of punching your spouse/partner.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-24 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
That's a choice, though. It may stem from something biological or naturally developed, but you still have to choose to punch your spouse. You don't choose to be depressed.

People aren't born with punching people...?

"born with/develop" Now it seems that we're adding the hidden adverb "naturally" which doesn't exactly make sense to me from my developmental psychology courses, but go figure.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-24 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
You would still have to choose to punch someone though.

Late response is late! But! Going off topic...

There actually are genes that affect aggressiveness. Two copies of the gene makes you more POTENTIALLY incredibly aggressive. Of course, this is where the argument for nurture comes in because, even though you have two copies of the gene, you still might grow up to be incredibly gentle. The researcher, who was extremely gentle, possessed two copies of the gene... as did his entire family, including his great aunt several times removed who had been a famous (and literal) ax murderess!

It really gets ridiculous when you point out that "mental illness" can include everything from substance abuse to grief/trauma counseling. Putting victims of crime seeking help on the same list as violent offenders and guys with restraining orders doesn't make a lot of sense.
