Re: Things you've been thinking about lately

I hate being always, always being told "it's a compliment!" to be called young-looking. It's a compliment when you're middle-aged and your friends say it to you on your birthday. It's NOT a compliment when you're a young adult and people say it to you on the job (even though they smile and pretend it is). How does nobody seem to understand the difference?

Because they never experienced that. And if they did at one point, then they've lost all memory of what it feels like.

Honestly, I don't even mind it now that I'm nearly thirty. It's nice that I can still pass for 21. But the thing is, people... still act different when I tell them I'm nearly thirty. When I was twenty six, it was "you're twenty six? You look fourteen, oh my god! You sound fourteen too, you're so cute!" Go. Away. *Shudders* It's annoying.

When I turned thirty a couple years ago my workplace put a 'Happy 30th' balloon by my desk and I spent the entire day having customers and people from other offices coming by and making (perfectly serious) comments about the balloon being a funny joke and what was my real age. Got annoying real fast. Now when people ask me my age I've just starting picking a random younger age and trying to see how young I can go before someone calls me out on it (current record: 19).

NA Yeah, whenever the topic of my age come up I usually say, "How old do you think I am...?" I know it puts people on the spot, but I kinda enjoy it because hey, they did it to me first. No one has been able to guess right. Mostly I get 19-22. I'm 30. And then I get the :o face.

I feel you on that one, anon. I always remember this one time when I was in high school a guy I was taking music lessons from told me something along the lines of "Most girls your age look like they're in college already, but you look like you're still in junior high!" Then when I got annoyed he told me that he meant it as a compliment, because clearly what every high school girl wants to hear is "All your peers look like women but you still look like a little girl."

Meh, I've always taken it as a compliment, because I knew that when I got older it would be advantageous. And now I'm in my mid-thirties and sometimes I still get carded, so it's all good.
