I dunno, I think the same thing could be said of, say, people who have an interest in survival horror games but refuse to play them because they're too scary. The same question can be posed as well--it's an understandable reason, but is it really worth dropping the game altogether, even if it means missing out on an amazing story?

Yeah, that's actually been a dilemma I've had with survival horror games. XD But while I have a cursory interest in the stories, I wouldn't say that I really wanted to play Resident Evil or Silent Hill. If I'd really wanted to play them, I think I might've tried.

(Fortunately, I didn't have to decide. I wound up moving in with someone who plays them. :D )

Anyway, I was trying not to assume that it was a "TURN-BASED COMBAT SUCKS, I ONLY PLAY REAL GAMES" mentality (hence all my slashies) but regardless of why the turn-based combat turns her off, I think it's a shame to miss out on a game you're really intrigued by because one aspect of it doesn't work for you.
