7. FFXII is only slightly turn-based. If you're going for totally non-turn based, Vagrant Story might be up your alley, but it's old and as a cult classic, it's going to be hard to find.

However... if you don't play video games for their plot, I can understand hating the gameplay aspects. However, you have to understand that you're missing out on great stoies when you do that. Also, a lot of RPGs aren't truly turn-based - the ATB system of the FF games isn't 100% turn based. It's similar, and I know it's similar enough to piss off a lot of fans of more free systems, but on the other hand, I think it adds enough novelty and time-based interaction most of the time.

11. That's actually why FFX-2 disappointed me so much. I thought X!Yuna a much stronger character than X-2!Yuna. In X, Yuna was willing to give her life, and to overcome an ordeal just to bring the world happiness for however long it would last. But in X-2, she brings others into danger in some stupid search for one guy. All things considered, I really thought Yuna was one of the best female FF characters simply because of how strong she is. I like Aeris for the same reason - femininity doesn't equal weakness.

Though, on the other hand, I very much applaud characters like Ashe (and Celes to some degree) who are stronger in a more offensive way - they're novel, and I feel like that sort of strength hasn't been done often enough. The white-mage RPG heroine can be extremely strong when done well, but I think RPGs need to be more willing to try and branch out and have different types of female lead characters. It's great to do one type and really nail it, but diversity makes a game fun too.

43. I never played that game, I just watched a friend play parts and was spoiled for it. But when documentaries talk about Mitochondrial DNA and Mitochondrial Eve I lol like I have never loled before.

I agree with 11. I did not like Yuna at first and I found her rather cardboard, until I began looking deeper, and realised that, even though she is a little too perfect [but shows her weakness eventually, so whatever, I was happy to realise she was normal, just very, very strong], she is how you said. I never played X-2, but I absolutely hated how she would put people in danger for Tidus. [Well, I hate Tidus, but even if I liked Tidus...]

11. I love Celes so much. ;_;

Actually, one of the things I really liked about FFVI, though, was how Terra didn't end up with anybody. Because as much as I ship her with Edgar, I thought that was a really nice smack in the face to the stereotypical true love happy endings, suggesting that a woman can find fulfillment and love in ways other than the healing cock.

I think that's kind of a tangent there, but yeah. Female characters, avoiding the stereotypes, blah blah etc /o/;;

I really never end up liking the FFs with canon romance as much as I do the ones without it. I might like a character or story arc a whole lot, but in terms of overall, I mean. I'm not sure if it's because of that, or if that's a side effect of the fact that a romance-centered plot just happens to do a lot of things that I don't like.

If there's one thing that I really like is when a story of any sort (and games especially) takes a genre stereotype and neglects it. There's a lot to be said for really getting that stereotype and doing it well, but there's even more to be said, imo, for shooting for the thing that isn't commonly done*. As much as people rag on the FF games for being walking stereotypes (I'm sure you've seen at least some of my conversations with that FPS fan irl friend of mine), I think they're anything but. There's a lot of times that they're really gutsy when it comes to bucking the existing stereotypes and still pulling it off.

Lol on topic what is that?

*Edit: And by which I mean actually trying to do it. Because I think FFXII proved to me that Squeenix wasn't really trying on certain previous attempts to make "strong aggressive female leads." (*Cough FFX-2 yes?) If you try to buck a stereotype only halfheartedly, I think you screw it up more than if you really want to take that stereotype and shove it somewhere.

The secret was THIS CLOSE to also being about Aerith, just for the record. I admire both of them for their incredible strength that isn't focused on hitting things.

Yes, X-2!Yuna isn't as great as FFX Yuna - I still liked the game, and her characterization, for what it was. But you're right, X!Yuna is just... better. She's definitely one of my heroines for that quiet strength of hers.

That is also a good point! It's just as important to show the other kinds of strength. I love Ashe and Celes. And Faris is one of my all-time favorites. :D

Also, re: 7, I'm going to make myself toooootally obvious and VERY VERY EMPHATICALLY SECOND that Vagrant Story rec because Vagrant Story is made of good and excellence.

\o/ Faris! I didn't much like FFV, but I loved Faris.

I really wish it was easier to get a hold of Vagrant Story because I'd just lend it out to everyone and make them play it.

I have ridiculous fondness for FFV. And Faris was WIN. 8D I always thought she was so much more interesting with Bartz than her sister was

God, I know, same here. I was lucky enough to find a copy ONCE and I've never seen it again. But that game is art. :(
