No comment about the character because I don't watch the show, but regarding the B!S... that's crazy. It's your name, people should defer to you when it comes to how you want it pronounced, fuck their annoyance. Unless they're incredibly stupid, it shouldn't take any more than one correction for them to get it anyway.

(But maybe I'm bitter too, because I have a "foreign" name that people insist on mispronouncing all the time. even though it is a monosyllable name that's a homonym of one of the most oft-spoken words in the English language.)

My surname is a perfectly straightforward, Irish-type name. It had a "K" in it, and 80 of people who first day it pronounce the K as a hard "g" sound. I've been reduced to saying, "pronounce the K as if it was a K."

I don't get angry about it, but I do correct people. It's my name!

But the character in the show has the opposite situation. Her name is Gou. That's actually her given name. But it sounds masculine, so she wants people to call her the more feminine sounding Kou instead. By all means, her right, but her real name is actually Gou.

The comment does specify that it's speaking to the OP's experience with their name, and not the character's.

my name has an ae in it, most everyone I meet who reads it first tries to say it as an ay. THIS IS WRONG! and there are no other words it can be read as but it sounds like a portamu of two well known names. can they not hear me?
