No comment about the character because I don't watch the show, but regarding the B!S... that's crazy. It's your name, people should defer to you when it comes to how you want it pronounced, fuck their annoyance. Unless they're incredibly stupid, it shouldn't take any more than one correction for them to get it anyway.

(But maybe I'm bitter too, because I have a "foreign" name that people insist on mispronouncing all the time. even though it is a monosyllable name that's a homonym of one of the most oft-spoken words in the English language.)

My surname is a perfectly straightforward, Irish-type name. It had a "K" in it, and 80 of people who first day it pronounce the K as a hard "g" sound. I've been reduced to saying, "pronounce the K as if it was a K."

I don't get angry about it, but I do correct people. It's my name!

(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
But the character in the show has the opposite situation. Her name is Gou. That's actually her given name. But it sounds masculine, so she wants people to call her the more feminine sounding Kou instead. By all means, her right, but her real name is actually Gou.

my name has an ae in it, most everyone I meet who reads it first tries to say it as an ay. THIS IS WRONG! and there are no other words it can be read as but it sounds like a portamu of two well known names. can they not hear me?

Sorry but no. Anyone who refuses to accept what you tell them is the correct pronunciation of your name, and instead calls you something else because they like it better or whatever, is being a jerk.

idgaf about the show, but the idea that "people will call you whatever they want to, and you should just accept it" bothers me.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-24 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I know they're jerks, but they don't and won't change because I tell them they're being jerks. Also a fact of life.

We have a few people with "foreign" names in our project (Vietnamese and Turkish), and it drives me up the wall that people make no effort to pronounce them correctly.

Also hmm-slav and hmm-mir are different names, just call the dude hmm (his preferred nickname) if you can't remember the ending!

One is my name; the other is not

My name is one with an odd spelling that has no correlation with how it is actually said. Everyone who I correct always try to make sure they got it right.

The exception being bullies. And if my name wasn't weird they would have found another way.

So yeah... People should defer to you on how your name is said, not what they want. Sorry that you had to deal with people like those so much... but still...

(Anonymous) 2014-07-24 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I preferred Gou to Kou from the beginning since it fits in with the boys' name theme, but I'm still disappointed that the matter is just dropped out of exasperation. If she had decided that she liked her name as it was given, I would be pleased, but to have her just give up because people refuse to respect her wishes? Ugh.

My name has two common pronunciations too-- one is the way to pronounce my name and the other isn't. I'm not going to have a fit if someone gets it wrong, but I am going to correct them and expect them to defer to that correction. I'd say anyone else's name the way it's meant to be said too. That's just courtesy.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-24 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Technically there's no canon explanation for why it was dropped. I think the writers just forgot about it or decided it was getting boring and they didn't want to bother.

I have the same issue with my name and ended giving up on correcting people, since the other pronunciation is far more common and most people just refuse to use the right one because they think it's weird/wrong.

I don't like it, but correcting people all the time is tiresome specially when it's pointless. So... yeah, been there, done that so I get why she stopped correcting other people too and I think it would have been weird if they had started calling her Kou all the time.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
But that doesn't means fans should call her Gou. OP is going too far the other way.

My sister's name is Mara. Most people call her Maur-uh, when it's actually pronounced more like Sarah. It drives her crazy, and that's fine, considering it's her name and she can pronounce it however she likes. People who don't respect that are stupid.

I don't understand why so many people get so butthurt about this. Like, I understand that sometimes it's important, but in this case it really wasn't. She was like 15 and she wanted her name to be pronounced in a way that sounded cooler to her. When I was that age like 1/4 of the kids at my school went through a phase of mispronouncing/misspelling their name because they wanted to be special snowflakes. Myself included (I tried to get people to call me Ra, which is a syllable in my name, because I was obsessed with Yu-Gi-Oh...). Then we soon all got over it, just like Gou did.

It's not some serious issue of self-identity, it's some kid dicking around.

I hate it when people have a preferred pronunciation of their name and correct people who say it wrong. How entitled can you get, wanting people to say your own name right?

I could understand this in a story written from the perspective of other characters, but in a story from her perspective, wouldn't she keep referring to herself by her preferred name? Just because she's given up on other people accepting her wishes, doesn't mean she's changed her mind about liking it.

I thought it was implied that she gave up on 'Kou' because she realized it wasn't that big of a deal. Specially considering that she was being teased by Nagisa, who's been a play doll for his three sisters his whole life and is entirely blase about masculinity or femininity. I never got that he was teasing her just to be annoying, but to make a point that her name didn't make her boy-ish.

I can't fault the show for having 'inverted' names and have the characters not mind at all.

I think the insistence on calling her Kou is silly, too. She's not a real girl, so it really doesn't matter what you call her, it is impossible to offend her because she's not real. Meanwhile, though, everyone on the show calls her Gou, so it would kind of be odd to call her by a name only she goes by, personally.

I think the tumblr free! fandom got 'this girl isn't keen on her boyish name and would prefer to be called by a nickname' mixed up with things like trans issues, where different names and pronouns are important. so much so that they take it as a personal affront when someone refers to her as 'gou' because 'OMG that's NOT her preferred name!!!' srsly, it is NOT that important. she clearly does not care in the show. she was probably anticipating being made fun of for her boyish name, but she wasn't, so she dropped it.

+ she's a fictional character and referring to her by her given name when writing about said character makes a lot more sense than substituting a nickname.
