But Gou is saying her own name wrong when she says it's Kou. Her parents named her Gou.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
And this is different than Haru insisting on being called Haru instead of Haruka how exactly?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
Haru doesn't insist on being called Haru though. He's perfectly fine with Gou and Rei calling him 'Haruka-senpai'.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 03:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Except for that time in High Speed when he told Makoto that he would stop talking to him if he called him Haruka.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
...Haru is a nickname of Haruka. And he never reacts either way to being called Haruka.

Kou is not a nickname of Gou. It's a different name entirely.

No but you don't understand, everyone can choose how they want their name to pronounced and you're a horrible person if you don't listen to them. Like my name is spelled "John" and I like to pronounce it like "Sasuke" but my mum's a huge bitch and she won't listen to me. I'm pretty sure this counts as child abuse.

"My name is Jennifer, call me Jen."
"Your parents named you Jennifer, I'm going to call you Jennifer."
"Actually, I'd prefer - "
"Shut the fuck up, Jennifer. It's not up to you."

lol no

(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
It's more like "My name is Jennifer, but I pronounce it like 'Hennifer' because it sounds more exotic"
"Shut the fuck up, Jennifer. Stop being a twat."

No, it's really not. Why exactly does it hurt you so much to call someone what they want to be called?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
What, so do you want everyone to be able to choose their own name whenever regardless of their intention? What if I ask you to call me 'greenvelvetcakeisanidiot', and say it's really important to me? Because it is, man, I'll be really upset if you don't.

Intention is important. If you felt you identified with greenvelvetcakeisanidiot, or just enjoyed the name (because it is a truly great name, if unoriginal), then why not? But if your intention is to be hurtful, like "I'd like you to call me Adolph Hitler, please," well then, there's a problem.

But yeah, you want a name, I'll call you that name, because it's no skin off my nose but it might make you happy.

please tell me you're going to make a greenvelvetcakeisanidiot sock account. I would be so proud.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
Well I suppose that's fair enough, I guess we have different priorities about that sort of thing.

I've just had too many experiences with special snowflake teenagers who suddenly decide it's the most important thing in the world to have a "cool" name, instead of appreciating the name they have. Again, I understand that sometimes there'll be a good reason for wanting to change your name in some way but I also think that sometimes it's important to accept who you are and come to peace with the fact that your parents didn't call you Violence McDanger or whatever.

Hahaha sorry I haven't even got around to making a normal DW account, I only come here for F!S. Maybe one day though.

uhh Jen is a nickname of Jennifer. (and seriously, if you're offended that someone uses your full name and not your nickname, c'mon.) Kou is a completely different name from Gou.

As the other anon said, it would be more like, my family named me Jennifer but call me Shakira, you assholes.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 07:13 am (UTC)(link)
I have a friend named Jennifer who usually went by Jen. Recently, she decidedly to change her name (not officially) to something more unusual, though the short version is technically the same (now 'Gen').

I defer to her choice even though I have known this woman as 'Jennifer' for years. Because it's not important to me, but it is to her.

And? I still have no idea why people find it so offensive to want to be called a different name, even for no better reason than 'it sounds cooler.' Not sure how saying someone should be named what they want to be named makes me the asshole here.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 02:57 pm (UTC)(link)
ayrt first clarifying "assholes" was not in any way directed at you. it was hyperbole of my hypothetical character. :P

I don't think there's anything wrong with people having a preferred name. I definitely know people dislike their full names and go by nicknames, or middle names, or whatever. But your name is still your name, like it or not, and it's not wrong for people to call you that, and most of the time I do think it's overly insensitive to throw a hissy fit because of it.

And there are... levels. I knew a guy who never told me his real name because he insisted that he wanted to be called Squall (as in, from Final Fantasy) and he hated his real name. He felt Squall suited him better. Coincidentally, was also obsessed with the character. I never felt the need to respect his wishes in that case.
