I can't speak for anyone else, but my problem is that this is a symptom of a larger problem Jeff Davis has with creating and writing characters. In his world, people only exist through relationships and not through their own personalities/wants/conflicts. Danny isn't the first character who didn't have a relationship anymore and was therefore written off. There was plenty Danny still could have done on the show, especially since it was shown that he knows what's going on in Beacon Hills. (And this is holdover bitterness after Boyd was killed off for the same lack-of-relationship reason.)

TL;DR Jeff Davis is a bad writer. This is just another instance.

This x100.

(I actually stopped watching when Boyd died -- wasn't it like the previous episode they alluded to his dead sister and how he felt her death was his fault? And then all of a sudden, "Oh, he's dead because we didn't know what to do with him without Erica." You literally gave us a glimpse of what you could have done with Boyd's character arc one week ago!

But yes, excellent summary of Davis's relationship problem.)

(Yeah, they did mention his sister. On top of that, if Jeff is really hung up on relationships, he could have further explored the dynamic between Boyd and his fail-Alpha Derek. There was a lot to do with Boyd, and there was a lot that could still be done with Danny.)

THIS! They could have developed so many characters... Boyd, Erica and Isaac were my favourites in this show. There's also the counsellor lady who was fleshed out A BIT (in relation to the murderous teacher), Deacon who has no background at all besides being a consultant, FBI Dad, LAURA WHO DIED IN THE PILOT and her mum, could go on and on. Didn't like the twins, but what about their parents and family (er, dead? raised by wolves? what?)?
