(Anonymous) 2014-07-24 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)On the other hand, I did make a secret about two years ago complaining about the way that "football fandom" (as opposed to football fans) seemed to involve an inordinate amount of slashing of players and not a lot of football discussion, and there was a definite feeling that that split was largely (but not entirely) along gender lines.
There's also the blog Popular, where three* replies into Three Lions somebody was complaining that their friend spent an inordinate amount of 1996 "explaining the offside rule to girls called Fiona with red crosses painted on their faces singing about 'thirty years of hurt'".
In conclusion... yeah. The Premier League starts up again in a few weeks, so let's all have fun then!

(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 12:11 am (UTC)(link)Though, me and my mother spent a significant time fanning (is there a gender neutral term D:, well she fangirled, I fanboyed) over the players on their own. I'll tell her she can do it WITH MORE GUYS AT THE SAME MOMENT. We'll have a blast. Yes, none of my friends are sports fans, NONE.
I'm not surprised about offside being misunderstood xD, I know people not getting it. However, I don't know the rules of rugby. Basketball is just similar to football to me with shorter times and more hoops ;) .

And I think the Popular entry you're talking about (also, holy crap, someone dropping a Popular reference! Awesome! I love that blog!) actually does some good work in talking about that. Tom's post goes into a lot of stuff about the interaction between class, fandom, and football in the 1990s, when the game was opening up to the middle-class, which of course has been talked about a lot to that point, and then you have a lot of people in the comments, including the comment that you're referring to, extending that analysis to gender. There are divisions in fandom obviously, and it's no use pretending they don't exist, but to me, there's nothing wrong with having multiple kinds of fans. What it's about is the thing that we all love and the shared experience that comes from loving it. That's what's important about fandom, not about who's been here longest or knows it best.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 12:19 am (UTC)(link)Anyway, there is a division on public commentary of sports regarding gender. Noticed that women usually were questioned when daring to share an opinion on tactics or squads and mercilessly tested on knowledge. Other viewpoint was that a female fan was a "special awesome snowflake". Neither is true, as the amount of fans did not differ between genders at all.
However, it's not prevalent as it was recently, so it's good.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 01:02 am (UTC)(link)I don't see the point. It's not like it stops people from responding, since everyone has to get their "I'm dismissing your opinion! Look how much you're not affecting me!!!" comment in.
