(Anonymous) 2014-07-24 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)Your attempt at trolling is so transparent I could sell it to Swarovski.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-24 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)BUT ... proper media totally did that. Did everyone see the series of articles popping up everywhere? Mostly guids for women "on how to survive during World Cup" or "thehehe how does teh footballz work!?!?!". Ironically, in Europe there's no gender division with football fans, it's only present in bad, bad media. In my area, everyone goes to the local games, same with my hometown. My family all loves sports in many forms (many forms because mum and her bro are biggest volleyball fans ever).
So, while it's a troll ... this happened on a large scale.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-24 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)On the other hand, I did make a secret about two years ago complaining about the way that "football fandom" (as opposed to football fans) seemed to involve an inordinate amount of slashing of players and not a lot of football discussion, and there was a definite feeling that that split was largely (but not entirely) along gender lines.
There's also the blog Popular, where three* replies into Three Lions somebody was complaining that their friend spent an inordinate amount of 1996 "explaining the offside rule to girls called Fiona with red crosses painted on their faces singing about 'thirty years of hurt'".
In conclusion... yeah. The Premier League starts up again in a few weeks, so let's all have fun then!

(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 12:32 am (UTC)(link)It took me ages to explain to a friend that fouls are a natural part of the game. And she asked if goalkeepers were allowed to use their hands.
My boyfriend's mum and sister didn't know that each player had a role on the football pitch. He tried to go in deep detail about it but soon gave up and told them some player's role is to score goals, some is to stop goals going in :D
One of them apparently also asked if Götze was the only person who won the world cup because he scored the goal. And they thought that Germany had scored two goals when they replayed the first goal.
Men seem a bit more pragmatic in this respect, if they don't like football they're probably not watching the World Cup. It is a bit annoying when:
- People who don't care about football act like their life depends on the WC
- People who know nothing about the teams go on about how they support them
- People who know nothing about the players start going on about how amazing they are and how they've liked them for years
- You know people won't give a **** about football after the WC

You say this like you don't always getting a bunch of people watching international events, no matter if they're die-hard fans of the event, casuals, or only watch it once every 4 years.

Also, what country do you live in that woman don't "care" about football?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 05:22 am (UTC)(link)People, ~not just women~, do this for the Olympics, too.
(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 06:47 am (UTC)(link)I know people who only watch the Superbowl, but otherwise don't pay any attention to American football.
It's an event, they make it an event, part of the reason people who wouldn't normally be sports fans get into it is that it only comes around every once in a while and only for a short period. But there's nothing wrong with seeing people get excited about something and wanting to join in.
