See now, why do you have to go and do that? Are annoying bandwagon-jumping fans somehow more or less annoying depending on their gender? That does not make an ounce of sense to me.

Are you telling me that women can't be football fans? Is that what you're telling me?

If so, then to hell with you.

No, the ITV commentators will be back next season.

4/10 Troll Score

(Anonymous) 2014-07-24 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Football/soccer is one of the most popular sports played by women. And, at least in the US (where this anon currently resides), the women's soccer team is amazing in terms of their placement on the world stage.

Your attempt at trolling is so transparent I could sell it to Swarovski.

Boo. I was expecting a secret about strong feelings about sports. Something crazy about the colours of soccer player foot sock things being the colours to your future wedding or whatever.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-24 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Troll lalala~!

BUT ... proper media totally did that. Did everyone see the series of articles popping up everywhere? Mostly guids for women "on how to survive during World Cup" or "thehehe how does teh footballz work!?!?!". Ironically, in Europe there's no gender division with football fans, it's only present in bad, bad media. In my area, everyone goes to the local games, same with my hometown. My family all loves sports in many forms (many forms because mum and her bro are biggest volleyball fans ever).

So, while it's a troll ... this happened on a large scale.

You tried.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-24 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
On the one hand, the troll is strong in this one.

On the other hand, I did make a secret about two years ago complaining about the way that "football fandom" (as opposed to football fans) seemed to involve an inordinate amount of slashing of players and not a lot of football discussion, and there was a definite feeling that that split was largely (but not entirely) along gender lines.

There's also the blog Popular, where three* replies into Three Lions somebody was complaining that their friend spent an inordinate amount of 1996 "explaining the offside rule to girls called Fiona with red crosses painted on their faces singing about 'thirty years of hurt'".

In conclusion... yeah. The Premier League starts up again in a few weeks, so let's all have fun then!

Dude, can you not at least try to make a secret like this sound somewhat passive-aggressive and backhanded or indirect to make your trolling somewhat interesting? Just bluntly stating "women can't be good football fans" is really goddamn boring.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
That's way too rude but I can sort of see where they're coming from...

It took me ages to explain to a friend that fouls are a natural part of the game. And she asked if goalkeepers were allowed to use their hands.

My boyfriend's mum and sister didn't know that each player had a role on the football pitch. He tried to go in deep detail about it but soon gave up and told them some player's role is to score goals, some is to stop goals going in :D
One of them apparently also asked if Götze was the only person who won the world cup because he scored the goal. And they thought that Germany had scored two goals when they replayed the first goal.

Men seem a bit more pragmatic in this respect, if they don't like football they're probably not watching the World Cup. It is a bit annoying when:

- People who don't care about football act like their life depends on the WC
- People who know nothing about the teams go on about how they support them
- People who know nothing about the players start going on about how amazing they are and how they've liked them for years
- You know people won't give a **** about football after the WC

Maybe you should appreciate more people watching your shitty sport? More viewers means more broadcasts and easier access.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
See, I don't get why people have to be shitty about people who pay attention to a big exciting event that's all over TV. It's fun and harmless. I watch soccer every four years, during the World Cup, and I'm not hurting anyone by doing it.

Got excited when I saw Manu right away, but this secret is pretty boring.

You say this like you don't always getting a bunch of people watching international events, no matter if they're die-hard fans of the event, casuals, or only watch it once every 4 years.

Also, what country do you live in that woman don't "care" about football?

It's possible to just say "soccer experts" without the "ugh women" part.

0/10, way too obvious.

it's stupid to complain about female fans only caring about football during the world cup because this happens with literally every sport. more women are online and in fandom so you may be seeing it more in this case, but how are these women any different from the fair-weather sports "fans" who appear only when their team is in the finals/nationals/etc? I can tell you there are just as many dumb guys out there who know the bare minimum about whatever sport they're suddenly a "huge fan" of, but no one ever bothers to give them an interrogation about players or rules, or worse, just figure they don't know anything about sports in the first place. because that guy who'd never even mentioned soccer before turning up to the local bar with his face painted and wearing a jersey with the price tag still on is clearly a long-time fan. this is not exclusive to women at all, and it's silly to pretend it is, or that they're the worst contingent.

People, ~not just women~, do this for the Olympics, too.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 06:47 am (UTC)(link)
Sure there are people who follow ice skating or gymnastics all the time, but a lot more follow them for a only a few weeks every four years.

I know people who only watch the Superbowl, but otherwise don't pay any attention to American football.

It's an event, they make it an event, part of the reason people who wouldn't normally be sports fans get into it is that it only comes around every once in a while and only for a short period. But there's nothing wrong with seeing people get excited about something and wanting to join in.
