I'm kind of over being righteously offended by it. The trailer presents it as it is: cheesy romance fantasy. And that's what it is, too. Like it or not, a lot of women fantasize about the dark brooding rich prince type taking a special interest in their wallflower self, add some kinky sex, and in the end this is a story written by a woman for women. Is it bad? Yes. Is the relationship presented unhealthy? YES. But seriously, it's romance fantasy. If people try to take it as a literal love story, or even a legitimate story, judge away, but this shit is kink and it's not uncommon kink either. Don't pretend you haven't wanked off to something more ethically questionable, because I sure have.

/soapbox

(also I'm gay and no, this movie is not my thing. but not gonna lie, I'll probably rent it or whatever and drink lots of wine with girl friends and watch it for the shits and giggles, and I won't feel like a bad feminist for it)

I just wish straight guys would stop citing it's popularity "proof" that ALL women are into being dominated (and furthermore, being unable to separate a fantasy from reality, and thinking if someone likes a book about it, they want it to happen in real life). I don't want guys thinking it's okay to actually be abusive and claim it's BDSM when it's not.

I'd agree but I've never actually seen a guy claim that. Not saying they aren't there - it's annoying when female authors get spotlighted for the fact that they are female, and everything they write speaks for "what women want" or how they think or something. Anyway, I'd hope most adults understand that this is romance fantasy and not "real". As a romance fantasy, I don't think the book is committing any unforgivable sins, besides perhaps terrible writing.

Are they still doing this?

That makes me rage more than anything in this whole debacle.

I am still offended by it in that so many people still look to it as some kind of legitimate representation of BDSM or BDSM relationships, and I genuinely worry that people will take away this representation of BDSM as the real deal instead of a dark fantasy version that's fine in fiction but terrible in reality.

Yeah, that's kind of my problem with it (apart from the general bad writing).
