I could get away with all of them until I got to 'not wearing a helmet when riding a bike'.

D: Please tell me you're joking about not wearing a helmet.

Really, going without a helmet isn't that bad. If you're concerned about the safety risks, it doesn't make sense to wear a helmet only on a bike.

Re: Would you qualify....

NO. No no no NOOOOO!!!

It really is so bad. Going without a helmet on a bike can mean the difference between a bad fall with a few bruises and permanent brain damage that affects your mood, personality, memory, ability to walk, ability to see.... everything for the rest of your life.

There is a HUGE increased risk of head trauma when you're on a bicycle as opposed to being inside a car or simply walking.

Holy shit goddamn I can't even stress enough how wrong that sentiment is. Everyone: please PLEASE wear a helmet. I say this as someone who has to work with people who have suffered brain injuries. You NEED to protect your head when you're on a bike.

I understand in cities where there's cars, but for the most part if you're not going fast and know how to bike it's not more necessary than say when you're jogging.

Re: Would you qualify....

If you're jogging and you fall over, there's a pretty good chance you're going to be able to put your hands out and avoid hitting your head. On a bike, you're both going faster than the average jogger, and you usually don't have the same forewarning and ability to spare your head in the fall.

It is more necessary. The force of impact you could potentially sustain while walking or running is many, many times less than what you could potentially sustain while you're on a bike, no matter what you believe about your own skill.

Wear a helmet.

Gotta agree here. Wear a helmet, please.

Agreed so hard. I don't care if you're riding a bicycle, a motorcycle, a skateboard, an ATV or a horse, helmets are always a good idea. Several years ago, I invited a friend out to ride my horse Sharif. She said she was a good enough rider that she didn't need the helmet, but I talked her into wearing it anyway. It's good thing she did, because as soon as she nudged Sharif into a trot he spooked at something (probably another baby bunny, knowing Sharif) and she fell right off and hit her head on the roundpen's metal tubular panels. The helmet ended up with a massive dent and a few cracks. She ended up getting a prescription of extra-strength ibuprofen the next day. Her doctor said that if she hadn't been wearing the helmet, it could have easily cracked her skull or worse.

So remember kids, no matter how good you are (or think you are)at riding of any kind, accidents can still happen and wearing a safety-certified helmet can mean the difference between life and death!

I only bike to work without helmet. It takes ~5 minutes and I'm only on the actual road in a neighborhood which is empty 95% of the time because it's in the middle of the day. I cross the main street on foot at a crosswalk and then I'm pretty much there. Still risking it, but oh well.

You really are. I don't think you have any idea how much you're really risking if you happen to hit a patch of gravel or someone pulls out of a driveway into your bike and you fall and hit your head.

Helmets are only $25-50; a head injury could (and often does) mean the end of your ability to work, hold relationships, and care for yourself.

You're screwed if a car hits you, bike or not. And I'll take my chances with the suddenly appearing patches of gravel.

Re: Would you qualify....

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2014-07-25 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
A car is many times less likely to hit you as a pedestrian than it is to hit you while you're on a bike.

I don't understand why you're so willing to risk your entire life and future when it's so very easily prevented by just sticking a cheap piece of plastic over your skull.

Re: Would you qualify....

(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
No you're not. A friend got hit by a car on her way to school once, and the only serious injury she got was a sprained wrist, as opposed to the much worse injury she would have gotten if she hadn't been wearing a helmet.

Oh no. . . I hate to be part of a pile-on, but please do consider getting a helmet. Devastating head injuries can happen in the blink of an eye -- I know you feel safe and it feels so unlikely that anything would ever happen, but all it takes is that one time. Protect your brain!
