Seriously? This movie is how old? Does it really require a spoiler warning at this point?

OP

I asked myself the same question while I was making the secret and trying to decide if I should include a spoiler warning. I decided to include it anyway, because I'd rather risk getting chewed out for being annoying by being overly cautious than spoiling someone :)

Fair enough. It is certainly "damned if you do, damned if you don't." with regard to spoilers.

According to TV Tropes, you're referring to the second and third endings. The third was a compromise between the second (they're totally innocent) and the first (they kill the main character and get away with it.)

Oh... What I read was on TV Tropes too, but not the page for the movie. It was an example on a page about a trope subverting the trope of "paranoia means you're wrong." (Someone said that it was an egregious example that felt like an asspull, another added a comment that it was an asspull because of last-minute test audience reaction.)

Well, that's depressing, but I still like that first ending better than the one that got made.

I haven't seen this since I was a kid, but I don't remember them being foreigners, just odd.

They were from a Soviet Union satellite (of course... I don't remember if the specific place was given or not). They had accents and a typical Eastern European last name full of harsh consonants. I didn't get all of what that implied when I was seven, but I definitely picked up that they were from a "creepy" foreign country.

This movie is the only thing I've ever seen outside of Star Wars that had Carrie Fisher in it.

You've never seen Drop Dead Fred, then.

Nor When Harry Met Sally or Shampoo. I fail at Carrie Fisher movies.

How about Loverboy?

Or Blues Brothers!

Oh, honey, no, that needs to be fixed. Carrie Fisher with a rocket launcher.

Ah The Burbs! It was a family favorite for a long time and at one time I used to watch it at least once a week while on school break.

This movie was pretty eye-rolling.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-25 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
And I too thought they were building to them being innocent and a whole thing about how people shouldn't judge others, even if they're a little weird. But it probably still wouldn't have made the movie good - it's been a long time since I saw it, but it felt like they didn't really get the tone right for the comedy they tried to make it out to be.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
It has been years since I saw it (only once), and what I remember most about the film was that it seemed to be building to that speech that Tom Hanks makes, about how he and his buds were the monsters in the neighbourhood, that it wasn't anyone else, that they were the problem. It was a good speech and a good moment.

And then they completely undid it with the 'oh the weird foreign neighbours really ARE evil', and the film just cratered. It was never going to be a good movie, but that ending just made it a crap movie.

I agree with you, OP. This makes me just wanna go "fuck you, everyone. Fuck you."

Tucker & Dale vs. Evil did it better

"There we were minding our own business, just doing chores around the house, when kids started killing themselves all over my property."

(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
The key to T&D is that we see the movie from their perspective. At the very least, we get to know them. That didn't happen in The Burbs. I remember being disappointed as a kid that they weren't monster AND that they ended up being bad. Would have liked one where Tom Hanks ends up being evil.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 08:07 am (UTC)(link)
It's a dark comedy. The twist actually fits well with the humor in the rest of the movie.

Sardines?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 08:36 am (UTC)(link)
I really like this movie, but yeah, I actually expected them to turn out innocent in the end.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 10:20 am (UTC)(link)
I totally get it though and it's not about the time when this movie came out. "Censoring" bad endings and editing plot for the sake of audience reactions happens all the time and so many good shows/movies have been ruined because of that. But after all a happy ending brings in more audience and money.
