Diablo was the raven's name in the original film, though it was never mentioned onscreen.

Pretty sure the raven's name is Diablo, in the animated movie anyway.

Per IMDB, the raven's name is Diaval. In Maleficent anyways. And I believe she does refer to him by name, though it's been a couple of months since I saw it.

Nothing to do with the secret, but I just googled that and he's kinda cute in a too-goth-to-date sort of way.

If you mean Diaval, he looks like that because he's a raven in human form. When he gets turned into a wolf and a horse, he's also black and... goth-looking.

Honestly Diaval is the best thing about the movie. He's awesome. (-:

For some strange reason I want to tickle him. Might be the outfit. I'll add the movie to my netflix account.

Gothic Wolf: Cousin to Courage Wolf. Will eat you and write bad poetry about it.

He really is cute, in terms of personality as much as (if not more than) appearance.

If it makes you feel any better, he actually isn't all that fond of his human form, either. When he's turned into a human from a raven, his first reaction is "what did you do to my beautiful self?!" He's a raven, heart and soul, and everything else is just shapes to him (human, dog, horse, dragon, etc.) that he takes on to serve Maleficent - though not always happily (his monologue after being turned into a dog is hilarious).

I'm a sucker for cutie-pie snarkers. To Netflix!

B!S: ... because Diablo a) was the name in the original Disney movie of Sleeping beauty and b) comes from the same linguistic root as Diaval?

wasn't that the rape metaphor anyway?
haven't watched the whole thing though

The Raven's Name and the Rape Allegory

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2014-07-26 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
The name of Maleficent's sidekick in the original Sleeping Beauty was Diablo. They changed it for Maleficent. They effectively implied that in the "maligned retelling of the 'true' story that is Sleeping Beauty", the Diablo thing was an intentional mispronunciation of Diaval.

Also, the other reason you may have reacted strongly to that scene was because it was a pretty blunt rape allegory. Just, y'know, throwing that out there.

But OP said she reacted strongly to it because she literally wants to fly. I mean, if that were a strong fantasy of mine, the cutting off wings thing would be literally disturbing, not for any metaphorical reasons.

Depends on how far you take it (i.e. her flying is also her self-confidence, bodily autonomy, deeply connected to her sense of self, etc.).

I just mean that this scene WAS emotionally powerful for a lot of people, even if for a different reason - and that this different reason might be why the scene was so emotionally powerful for the OP, even if it wasn't why the scene was impactful in the first place.

Everyone had their moment. Yes, yes, true love isn't just boy meets girl, yes yes. For me, the moment that made me feel the most was when she was flying, when she showed herself rallying the army. Seeing her be amazing, because I saw in her (protector of life, warrior, guardian, strong, etc.) what I've longed to see in me--that is she was who I always imagined myself to be.

Diaval is based on another word for Devil. It and Diablo have the same roots.

I think that was the strongest scene, too. It seemed to me a pretty obvious rape metaphor, but either way, it was a gripping scene.

Wasn't his name Diablo? Guess not in this movie. I wondered why they changed the fairies' names. I watched the animated movie right before seeing this in the theater and lol. I never realized how the fairies were pretty much the heroes of the movie and everyone else was super secondary, but in Maleficent, they were massively downgraded, and their names were different.

Kind of was disappointed with the movie. It was enjoyable, I guess I just was hoping it'd be a little darker and Maleficent would've been a bit more evil - but she was only "evil" for like, one scene. I get it's from her point of view, but it just wasn't as interesting as I thought it could've been.

too bad it was only rated pg. i get why but if it was any higher we might've had a little darker film

Why do people keep making secrets involving this home wrecking slut?
