Preparing for Yuletide
I love Yuletide, even with all the wank, and people who try to cheat the system, and general asshattery that goes with the fest. It's still so much fun for me. I've also met a great group of IRL fandom friends through the fest! Ah, good times. :D
Re: Preparing for Yuletide
Re: Preparing for Yuletide
I usually only participate in small fandoms for Yuletide. But I don't write much fic, maybe two or three chapters on my various WIPs every year, which are for larger fandoms. Yuletide is my one time to cut loose and write a fic in a fandom I probably wouldn't write for, if left to my own devices. C:
I thought of two more fandoms to check on, since posting my comment above. XD

to offer that they'd never expected to see asked for. ^^V That happened to me last year. I saw a fandom I knew but hadn't thought of beforehand, offered to write it, and ended up writing it. C:

Re: Preparing for Yuletide
Yuletide is a long-running small fandom exchange, started in the early 00s by some BNFs and their circle of friends. It's known for producing a high ratio of goodfic in smaller fandoms.
In a nutshell, you offer to write X fandoms, ask someone to write Y fandoms for you, and the matching program at AO3 finds you a recipient to write for, and an author to write for you. Fics are 1,000 word minimum, due a few days before Christmas. The fics go live on Christmas Day, and authors are revealed on New Years.
It's been held at AO3 for some time. You need an account to participate there. If you google "Yuletide fic exhange FAQ" you can find all sorts of results and tips. The official FAQ(s) are out of date and convoluted, which causes some of the wank that rises out of it every year. For now, here's the AO3 profile: http://archiveofourown.org/collections/yuletide2013/profile The mods are working on a fresh set of rules now.
Your timing for interest in Yuletide is perfect. Fandom nominations will begin in September. Once the fandoms and their characters are ready, signups begin and last for about a week. Assignments go out and writing begins (ideally) in late October or early November. Anyone new can participate in Yuletide, and you can receive an account at AO3 for the purpose. Read up about it at the LJ comms http://yuletide.livejournal.com/ and http://yuletide-admin.livejournal.com/. A lot of great info and tips come up hidden in all the moaning at http://yuletide-coal.livejournal.com/.
Yuletide has become quite famous, due to its long-running status, the various BNFs who participate, and the fic it produces. And the wank, too, nowadays. ^^;;
It's so much fun, for me!! The pressure of trying to write a fic to match your recipient's request, and hoping for a wonderful fic written just for you! Lots of people write extra stories beyond their single assignment, and you never know when you'll wake up on the 25th to a bonus gift or two!

Yuletide's exclusively for smaller fandoms, actually. There are limits every year that if a fandom is bigger than X (This year, it's looking like 1000 works combined between ff.net and AO3), then it's ineligible for the exchange.
Re: Preparing for Yuletide
Yes, Yuletide is for smaller fandoms. The rules this year define a fandom as being small enough if it has less than 1,000 fics total in English and over 1k in length at AO3 and FF.net combined.
Huge fandoms like HP (35,600k qualifying at AO3 alone), SPN (48,300), and Naruto (5,200) are much too big. The fandoms I'm planning on nominating have anywhere from zero fics total at both sites (a Stephen King short story, a new manga) all the way to the largest so far that's still small enough (an older manga with 490 fics between the two sites).
Here's the list of fandoms that had fic written for Yuletide last year. http://archiveofourown.org/collections/yuletide2013/fandoms. Skim down it for an idea of fandom size, though some of these will now be disqualified by the new rules, or have outgrown Yuletide thanks to so many new fics!
There is a medium-sized fandom fic exchange held earlier in the year called "Not Prime Time". I've yet to participate in that one, but I know it's been running for at least a couple years and seems to be sticking around. ^^ It's probably hosted on AO3, too, so you should be able to find it through a search.
But yes, Yuletide is for small fandoms! Here are some others I looked up that you can use as a size reference: Star Trek Deep Space Nine is too big at over 1k at FF.net and 920 at AO3. Dresden Files is slightly too big at 552 and 673. But Mad Men qualifies at 100 and 149! ^^V There's really no telling until you look at the numbers.
Anything else you're curious about, just ask! C:

Re: Preparing for Yuletide
And yes, I'm always nervous waiting for the assignment email. But I enjoy the rush from the agonizing suspense of not knowing what fandom I'll end up with and if I can write it...and I always hope my recipient included an easier-to-review fandom, juuust in case. ^^;
Re: Preparing for Yuletide
(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 04:57 am (UTC)(link)Even if you don't write your best-ever story for Yuletide, you still get to give a gift and receive one -- and most people are pretty excited to get a story in their fandom even if it isn't The Greatest Fic Ever Told.

It's going to be difficult for me to narrow down my requests. At least I can convince my dentist to nominate some fandoms for me. C: I've been adding to my list of potentials all week, and doing the research so I know what's small enough. Thankfully nothing is borderline, they've been definitely small enough, or too big by a fat margin.
