The interests of everyone in the system, not just the rich. The middle-class just as willingly cooperates in the continuance of it.

Also, it's still inaccurate to say "the rich" as that encompasses far more than "the super duper incredibly rich 0.1%" who are the shareholders and owners and the board. Most of the people making $250-300k a year are not the people making the rules and still have to answer up in order to keep their jobs, and the 1%ers not in the top 0.1% are stuck in the same system, albeit in a higher position with more money. Even if they don't realize it, they don't have the power to change anything, either.

All the "us vs. them" about "the poor vs. the rich" is just as bad and inaccurately simplified as "women vs. men" and "white vs. black" and "gay vs. straight" IMO. Issues like those can't be reduced to sound bite sized slogans and simplifications on either side. This is why I hate politics.

You're right that saying 'the rich' in this context is imprecise and wrong. That's very true. I apologize for that. I consciously chose to avoid using the precise term that I actually did mean, which was 'the capitalists', meaning the people who do own the capital in society and who make the decisions about how it is to be employed, because I was afraid it was going to become a whole other thing at that point.

It's true that tons of people are, in some sense, complicit in the system - the executives who report to the board, the middle-class managers, arguably all the workers. But while they cooperate in its continuance, they do not create those structures or those conditions. Those who control the companies do, in a lot of diverse ways. Again, to me, the fundamental fact is that the corporate and financial structures that we see - that both you and I agree are bad structures in many ways - don't come from nowhere. They are in general the result of conscious decisions and they work in general to the advantage of a specific class in society.

I don't think it needs to come down to us vs them. I don't think that those who control the capital are intrinsically evil or anything. They're making choices out of a combination of their own interest, and out of specific cultural beliefs, and out of a wide range of motives. Ultimately it's a question of the decisions that we've taken as a society, and the values that we have, and the laws we choose to enact and enforce. And I don't think I'm reducing things to sound bites here. Certainly if they are sound bites they're very verbose ones. But I do think these things are true.
