Oh yes, you would fit right in. Last Halloween I was DM'ing a version of Gary Gygax's "Tomb of Horrors" module (so an adventure I didn't create), and one of the challenges is for the characters to figure out that they have to put this magic ring they found through a slot in the door in order to get it to open. Specifically, the riddle says "a loop of enchanted metal." Well they discovered that one of their characters was wearing magical chainmail and they could separate out a ring and put that through the slot. I thought that was creative enough to allow them to open the door.

I haven't done a lot of it, but I know full well that nobody likes a railroading DM. Players are always going to want to do things in funny, creative ways. It's practically a requirement of the game! Like, my parents have stories like that from before they were married (which was in 1980) where my dad thought the best way to get around a werewolf was to throw his silver coins at it.
