I do the exact same thing, except I don't quite see it as starting wank, just trying to see how people feel about it and get more insight. Saying "so this thing isn't true right?" doesn't seem to work because people'll either say yes or no but if you say "this thing totally is true!" then people will be more likely to give their reasons for why it ISN'T true, at least from what I've seen.
