The neckbeard is the basement dweller stereotype. The dudebro is the fit douchebag that's probably in a frat. They're both misogynist, but their relationship with women are sort of different (neckbeard hates women because none of them want to deal with that mess, dudebro has probably had a relationship with a woman or two because their social skills don't suck but still has weird sexist ideals of what a woman is good for.) They're both misogynist, but they're from such different ends of the spectrum that conflating them is weird.

They can coincide pretty easily. The thing about a fratboy is that he acts that way because he lives in a male bubble, of sorts. Dudebros reinforce negative ideas about women amongst each other, the same sort of sexist attitudes that a neckbeard might have.

Once you get onto the internet, or in a nerdspace (say, the video game community), you get neckbeards behaving like dudebros because they're in a nice little echo-chamber of other guys reinforcing their crappy attitudes about women and rewarding one another with praise for saying sexist things.

I think it happened when things like video games started getting popular in the frathouse culture. Or at least that's where I see a lot of the crossover come from, both neckbeard and dudebro stereotypes started intermingling in the geek stereotype pool.

Now it seems they are just generic stereotypes to throw at the male geek crowd, whether they actually fit either stereotype seems to be irrelevant to some people now, it's just generic insults that get thrown at socially awkward geeks in general.

Kind of an odd double-standard because now neckbeards draw the dudebro insult, but I seriously doubt people throw the neckbeard stereotype at the actual frathouse bros, who tend to have better hygiene and physical condition
