I can't say I concentrate all my energy on one fandom, but as a busy person with hectic RL and quite a few penfriends, I can say that sometimes participating in multiple fandoms is too bloody exhausting.

I agree it tends to make one less myopic, though. There are just circumstances that make being a multifandom person a trying experience.

I agree but I don't really see how participating in multiple fandoms makes one less myopic, though.

It's not always the case, of course, but I find that different fanbases tend to have the kind of dramatic differences in opinions/behaviours that cannot be found within a single fanbase. And comparing and contrasting these behaviours makes one more tolerant and more open-minded.

nayrt

Yes, this, exactly. And not only the fanbases, but the different canon sources too.

Unless you're talking about old school Harry Potter fandom. It had all the opinions/behaviours.

The old Harry Potter fandom is absolutely fascinating. Someone should write a paper on it.

I think papers have already been written. We need a full blown encyclopedia at this point.

This only really applies if you regularly talk to one set of fandom people, and no one else.

I only participate in one fandom on a large scale, but I have plenty of very different friends that have no interest in fandom stuff.

I totes agree. I get all confused and exhausted quickly if I even try to maintain several fandom obsessions. I'm a fan of many things but the current focus is on one thing for now. So I can easily keep up and not run around. That's my personality. I just can't focus on many things at once, in general anyway. And I don't mind it.
