Because I can only be enthusiastic about one fandom at a time.

How do you know they're concentrating all their energy in one fandom though? They may just be using different platforms to interact with their fandoms of choice. At the moment, for example, I have three big obsessions:

-Star Trek
-Star Wars
-Spec Ops: The Line

I use Tumblr for Star Trek, Jedi Council Forums for Star Wars, and for Spec Ops: The Line…well…I largely dig through archives for stuff to read since the fandom is pretty dead.

Just seems like an odd assumption to make unless someone states outright that a specific fandom is the ONLY one they're currently interested in.

I can't say I concentrate all my energy on one fandom, but as a busy person with hectic RL and quite a few penfriends, I can say that sometimes participating in multiple fandoms is too bloody exhausting.

I agree it tends to make one less myopic, though. There are just circumstances that make being a multifandom person a trying experience.

Eh, everyone has their tolerance thresholds of involvement. I myself tend to have 1-2 major fandoms I'm involved in, and a few small ones on the side that I kind of keep up with every so often. I find that works best for me.

If someone wants to be a monofan, I don't see what's so wrong with that.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Because as someone who writes fic and wants to do a good job at getting characterisation and continuity right, it's easier to immerse myself in one fandom at a time. Trying to be involved in multiple fandoms splits my focus and makes me less productive as a writer. Sad, but true. It'd be nice to be fluent and productive in multiple fandoms simultaneously, but I can't do it and I've tried.

I'm usually multifandom, but if I fall into something new, then I really fall into something new. I'm not actually sure why, but eh, whatever, eventually my adoration for the new fandom calms down.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I barely have the energy (yay disability) for one fandom, let alone more, but I don't mind because it gives me a lot of happiness and fun. If you want to be so elitist about it, I hope you're not in my fandom.

That is just your opinion OP, not everyone is you, or enjoys things the way you do. I have multiple fandoms, but right now there is one particular fandom I'm having a lot more fun participating in, and therefor I'm putting a lot more into it than I am any of the others.

[personal profile] anonymous4 2014-07-26 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm a very sloooooow fic writer and, when I'm writing a fic, the characters and the plot totally fill my head, so I have no time or inclination to participate in other fandoms (other than watching TV).

I don't think either way of doing fandom is wrong(nor is one better than the other).

I'm someone who is into multipile fandoms but a large part of that is because I find it hard to focus solely on one thing at a time, so I kind of just bundle up everything I love together in one big happy pile. But if others don't do that I don't see the issue? We just approach fandom differently.

Eh, I'm okay with people enjoying fandom whatever way. If that means one fandom or ten that's perfectly fine.

I tend to follow too many things at once, and while I enjoy the source material, when you do that there usually isn't much time for fandom. So unless I focus on one fandom at a time, it's difficult to keep up. Right now there are a million new things I'd like to watch/play/etc, as well as old favorites I'd like to rewatch/play/etc, and there just isn't enough time for all of it. I don't blame people for sticking to one fandom; it's easier that way, and you get the 'full experience'. Some people might be able to manage being deeply invested in multiple fandoms at once (and tbh I'm jealous of those people), but for me that doesn't work.

Maybe that's partially why I like f!s so much; it's difficult for me to keep up with fandom news, and this place is handy for that.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm trying to match up all the fandom symbols. I recognise about fifteen of them, after that I'm guessing. From left-top to right-bottom:

Don't know, Sherlock, Doctor Who, Covenant?, Game of Thrones

Avengers, Lord of the Rings, Hunger Games, Charmed?, Star Wars

Star Trek, Don't know, Avatar the Last Airbender, Genesis?, Narnia

Walking Dead, Don't know, Merlin?, Don't Know, Adventure Time

Galaxy Quest?, Don't Know, Flammable?, Don't Know, Back to the Future,

300, Pokemon, Big Bang Theory?, Don't know, Don't Know,

Series of Unfortunate Events, Home Improvement?, Don't know, Bear?, Yes Minister?

Anyone help a girl out with the rest?

Sometimes it's not a choice at all. I can be pretty fandom monogamous when I fall hard for something. I may be interested in trying to be fannish about other things, but then fail to be able to concentrate and have my thoughts stray to the one fandom that's closest to my heart right now.

You're assuming it's some kind of conscious choice. I have only ever been actively involved in one fandom, but not because I think, 'I'm only going to be in this one fandom, that's it!' It's because nothing else I've watched/read/listened to has spoken to me like the fandom I'm into. Sometimes I wish I could get into other fandoms because my fandom is nearly dead now and I'm one of a very few people who still care about it. And that's tough.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I disagree. Tolerance (specifically, being able to ignore wank and deal with other people fanning differently than you do) is a personality trait. It can be developed, but just "being in lots of fandoms at the same time" doesn't make a person stop being opinionated or closed-minded, if they are. It just means they aggravate and yell at more people.

And depending on which canons you're into and what they do for you, saying "yes, I'd like six more like this one" may not be possible. People have already brought up time and energy constraints, but apart from that, if your primary focus is the story as opposed to the social experience of fandom ... some people have a much easier time finding canons that enthrall them than others.

I guess it depends on what you m3ean by "stick to one fandom at a time."

Personally, while I "consume" multiple fandoms, I generally only write for one at a time because, for me it's very important to a) keep the characters IC, be as canon-compliant as I can, and -- most important -- capture as closely as I can the "feel" of and cadence of whatever I'm writing for. This has led me to actually posponing reading/watching certain things I have a sense I'll want to write for, but that's primarily because I'm just not as good at multitasking as I used to be.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, I read/watch a lot of things, but I'm always in only one fandom at a time.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
It's really funny that you mention "less myopic" when this very secret is extremely myopic. It's basically "Why aren't people more like me?"

I am BNF in my fandom and I work full-time. I don't have time to do much in other fandoms... I like to read their fic and sometimes add some of my own, but it's rare. Not enough time in the world, sadly!

(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Dumbass, there's not one way to "fandom." Some people like getting involved in lots of fandoms, some people prefer sticking to just one. Your way isn't better, their way isn't better. It's just silly to think that one way of anything would work for everyone just because it works for you. That's fundamentally not how people are, being varied as they are.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I've really only ever participated in one fandom. I've watched and enjoyed a lot of shows, but I don't generally feel the need to do anything more than find a couple icons or gifsets for most shows. Some shows, like Supernatural or Teen Wolf, I followed for a little while and thought of dabbling in the fandom but ultimately lost interest before I did so. So, since it's only really "extreme" interest that draws me to participate in a fandom, I don't have many fandoms I interact with. I know there are tons of fandoms out there, I'm just not interested in them.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-26 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Because I have plenty of non-fandom interests to occupy me aside from my one fandom, thanks. Although I'm always pleased to know total strangers online are eager to tell me I'm having fun wrong.

People in multiple fandoms have characterization problems

(Anonymous) 2014-07-27 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
I've noticed in fanfiction. Occasionally characters inexplicably take on traits of characters in other fandoms. Also, cameos everywhere, and name dropping and OOCness. Like hell a bunch of superheroes are spending their time off debating the merits of Frozen, okay?
